For American businesses to compete with this new consumer love of foreign products, unions had to go. An American doll house company couldn't sell their doll houses for 20 bucks when the Chinese made doll houses were only 13. It became a trend that still exists today.

An American business cannot pay a floor sweeper $20.00 an hour to ride around on a floor sweeping machine, and be able to make those 10 dollar doll houses to compete. People started to get paid what they were worth instead of what a union demanded they get paid. Companies that couldn't break the unions left the state or country in some cases just to get away from them.

True, but the reality is it's only a two month recession so far. When things finally open back up, it will bounce back quickly.

When I couldn't find a job back in the 80's, I signed up for every temp service in town. Manpower finally called me one day. It was a four day job, and I took it. While it only paid minimum wage, I worked at that job like I was getting paid $15.00 an hour. When the company we were working at started letting Manpower workers go one by one, I was the last one they let go. They asked me to come back when the recession lifted for a full-time job when one became available.

Manpower gets feedback from their customers about their workers. That first company must have given me a very high rating as Manpower started calling me for every new job they got. Not only was I working at least 40 hours a week, but Manpower asked if I could work a double shift on some evenings. I was their star worker.

However the recession was so bad at that time, none of the other temp agencies called me once.

God forbid if we were neighbors.

Many of our fathers worked long hours and went without in order to save and to provide. There was no such thing as internet, cell phones, Starbucks, no one drove a BMW and if you even had a television there wasn't cable.

My father had a HS Diploma and got a union job at 18. On that salary he was able to raise four kids on a single salary, had good health benefits, a pension and retired at 60 with no debt. He sent four kids to college without going into hock.

Today’s kids have no shot at that American Dream. AOC wants to bring some of that back.

Good for your old man, I've met a number of union business agents in my time, and I know they do all right hanging out down at the Italian club. But most people nowadays aren't interested in paying tribute to Big Labor, and with major corporations taking over so much of our commerce, they don't have to.
