many people feel that Sodom and Gomorrah was wicked simply because the city was filled with people who were a violent and sexually abusive and a city where sexual abuse such as rape was a common occurrence.

I would have to agree, one thing to remember here is that God did not command that the people of Sodom and Gomorrah be killed or harmed by the hands of others.
