I think they certainly did a good job of that. Whenever individuals say, "It wasn't me. I never owned slaves. I have black friends, etc. etc." it is clear that they are defending themselves and not an entire system or institution.The focus on the Klan also helped to designate racism as an individual aberration rather than something systemic, institutional and pervasive.”
