And they were not "Socialists", other than they were also members early on of the NSDAP.

And several had been parts of earlier coup attempts.

Rohm himself was a street thug, and was increasingly frustrated that Hitler had not only reigned them in, he refused to let the SA "run wild" as they had wanted to do against all they saw as enemies. And while not a Marxist, Rohm grew increasingly Anti-Capitalist, and wanted to see things like major confiscation of land and businesses. As well as in his position as Minister of Defense he wanted to see the Officer Corps gutted, and placed directly under his command. Those were policies the NSDAP opposed.

And yes, he was indeed "cleaning house". But there were at least two coups in the planning stages, one within the SA and at least one other by Kurt von Schleicher (who was from an aristocratic Prussian family and detested the NSDAP and all Socialists including the SPD). He actually wanted to see all such organizations crushed and the country be run by the military.

No the US didn’t. The US doesn’t maintain stocks of either chemical weapons or ordnance. US companies sold Saddam equipment and precursor chemicals to make insecticide. Nerve agent is closely related to insecticide. If I remember correctly, the Germans discovered Sarin while trying to make improved insecticides.

Tear gas is harmless. The LD50 dose (lethal density to fifty percent of those exposed) is 100%. In other words to harm a human, tear gas has to totally displace all the oxygen in the air. I’ve been exposed to CS and CN tear gas on many occasions. In fact when I went through basic training the second time, I spent a half hour continually exposed to CS. My gas mask had a cracked voice emitter and leaked. Knowing it couldn’t harm me, I didn’t complain to the DIs and just endured the discomfort. About the only riot control agent that can harm a person is DM. It induces uncontrollable vomiting and the military is only authorized to use it when casualties are acceptable. I believe I’ve heard of civilian police departments using it in the fifties and early sixties, but not since then.

Since before the end of the Vietnam war. I was EOD then and we were briefed on the destruction of ALL US stockpiles of delivery systems and war gasses. I believe they finally finished burning the last of the VX stockpiles by the mid seventies. VX was the toughest to destroy, it had to be incinerated at very high temperatures.
