If the cancellation of the XL Pipeline caused higher gas prices it is only because oil companies knew that people would blame it on that.

It is a pipeline, not an oil field. The oil fields it would have served are still getting the oil. They are just transporting in via trucks and trains. There is no less oil. It is just costing the oil companies more to transport it to ports to be shipped to other countries. It was never going to be refined into gasoline to be sold in the US.

In fact, domestic oil production is at or near all time highs in the US. As are the oil company profits.

Cleaning the oil out of the sand is a filthy, filthy process, and expensive to boot.

I remember before the Tarsands were developed they said that oil would have be $100 a barrel to make it financially viable. Costs have come down a lot over time, but it's still the dirtiest oil in the world.

There are refineries in the Midwest that were refitted to refine tarsands about 8-10 years ago. That gas is sold in the region. Those refineries will be by-passed if the export pipeline is finished. It's a matter of profits and taxes.

Oil is a worldwide commodity. We sell our oil to other places and buy oil from other places regardless how little or how much we have.

That being the reality, if we import 50 million barrels of oil a month and export 50 million barrels of oil, that's considered energy independent. if we import 50 million barrels and export 51 million barrels, that would make us a world exporter of oil. Oil was never sold and never will be sold domestically only.
