Modern sci-fi stories about strange lifestyle and beings seem to capture our fascination and fear with/of the deformity of evolution. Does this interest reflect a modern curiosity about the other-worldly quality of imagination itself? Such storytelling was not popular before the proliferation of Darwin's theory (which is interesting).

This ominous yarn referencing corrosive substances was inspired by They Live.

An American space-explored named Tom was sent to the moon on a special mission to investigate an intelligent signal emanating from there. On the moon, Tom made contact with a very strange humanoid tribe/species known as the Sand People who lived underground and threw corrosive acid at anyone who threatened them. In fact, throwing acid had become a bizarre ritual for the Sand People. Tom noted that this strange species redefined the nature of imagination (and therefore intelligence). Tom started telling the Sand People about the American comic book anti-hero Two-Face (DC Comics), a rogue 'vigilante' who punished others after being disfigured by corrosive acid himself. Tom realized he was negotiating with a truly unusual race of beings.

As the Sand People became more and more intrigued by this Two-Face character astronaut Tom was telling them about, they agreed to send diplomats back to Earth with Tom so they could learn more about this comic book imagination. Tom gladly did so, and when he and two of the members of the eccentric Sand People landed on Earth, NASA scientists and Earth diplomats began studying them and interrogating them about their rituals/practices. The Sand People diplomats consented to being studied and interviewed, but they also requested they be shown humanity's stockpiles/samples of corrosive acid and samples of Two-Face comics. Tom and the Earth diplomats conversing with the two Sand People diplomats granted their odd request.

As the Sand People learned of humanity's controversial challenges regarding the detection of development of dangerous chemical weapons such as corrosive acid by rogue members of anti-Western nations (e.g., Iran), they realized humanity was in peril, possibly sitting in a position where they could literally destroy themselves with the chemistry imagination it so cherished/revered. The two Sand People diplomats decided that human civilization was one of negotiation and great risk. Tom and the Earth diplomats (including a NASA scientist) explained that humanity constantly worked to avoid all kinds of biochemical devastation.

As the two Sand People diplomats became more and more fascinated by the comic book anti-hero Two-Face (DC Comics), they concluded that humans were interested in entertainment which expressed/re-presented the psychological impact of chemical weapons and toxins. Since comic books were people among young people, the two Sand People diplomats realized that Two-Face was sort of a 'learning-tool' or 'teaching-tool' for evaluating terrorism and crime. The two Sand People diplomats requested to take back Two-Face comic book issues back to their tribal civilization on the moon.

After the Sand People's shuttle left Earth, it was then discovered that one diplomat stayed behind secretly, having substituted a human hostage and disguising him with make-up so as to better resemble Sand People. This Sand People 'diplomat' who stayed behind decided to become an urban underworld criminal named Black Mask (since he always wore a skull-mask of black-color). Black Mask initiated a three-year criminal campaign in NYC during which he took NYPD officers as hostages and splashed corrosive acid (stolen from various science labs across America) on the cops' arms. Black Mask was also voraciously reading the Christian Bible and decided he was an 'anti-archangel.' Was the Apocalypse near?

GOD: Black Mask is a real 'manslayer.'
SATAN: He's psychotic; the Sand People are really strange!
GOD: Astronaut Tom has stumbled upon a real tribal species...
SATAN: Black Mask is like an alien-rendition of the Unabomber.
GOD: I wonder why the Sand People are so fascinated by corrosive-acid.
SATAN: Perhaps the 'concept' of material/surface degradation reminds them of doom.
GOD: I suppose the frailty of surface material can symbolize 'ugliness.'
SATAN: Maybe Black Mask is a 'false prophet' of ugliness...
GOD: It seems Tom/humanity is learning about the dangers of chemistry!
SATAN: There is a lesson about evolution here.
GOD: I think that message is that speciation-imagination is highly-sensitive.
SATAN: Tom perhaps wishes Black Mask was fascinated by ropes (and not acid!).
GOD: Imagine if the Sand People colonized Earth and 'redirected' evolution.
SATAN: Earth beings would then be 'obsessed' with corrosive acid.
GOD: Molecular stability seems to be a thing of great wonder (not fear).
SATAN: Yet, Black Mask (and the Sand People) are anxious about degradation.
GOD: Maybe the Sand People are like Neanderthals...
SATAN: Maybe there will be a 'Great Tribulation.'
GOD: Let's go watch Alien: Covenant on Netflix!
SATAN: Yes, stories about species-deformity are rather valuable.
GOD: Perhaps Black Mask is indeed a 'false prophet.'
SATAN: Yet, both he and Tom are entertained by Two-Face.
GOD: The imagination is a wondrous thing.
