Abroad Appeal
Foreign leaders are not in the habit of endorsing candidates in American elections, for the obvious reason that they will end up working with whoever wins. But it has been clear since John Kerry won the Democratic primaries that most foreign leaders would prefer Kerry to Bush. Across Europe, the press reports overwhelming support for Kerry among many government officials, who think the Democrat, who attended a Swiss boarding school and speaks French, would restore U.S.-Europe relations and promote a more multilateralist international style. (Kerry's French cousin, Brice Lalonde, was once a presidential candidate himself in France.) Some Europeans may even be playing a dangerous game to try and help candidate Kerry. French President Jacques Chirac has repeatedly blocked any NATO role in Iraq or the expansion of NATO efforts in Afghanistan. Chirac may be hoping that this will damage Bush, by proving that the president has destroyed many of America's foreign friendships.
