A Trump rally has the feel of an all-day pep rally mixed with a megachurch service

“A Trump rally has the feel of an all-day pep rally mixed with a megachurch service — except with Trumpism as the religion. The rallies are places where a movement largely defined by grievance can be together, away from opponents — not to mention assertions that Trump lies and is harmful to democracy.

They are places to see that for many Americans, Trumpism isn't just about politics; it's a core part of their identities.

[…]

Trump started speaking in Rome at around 6:00 p.m., about an hour late. He would remain on stage for nearly 2 hours — long even for a Trump rally speech.

As usual, the demonization of undocumented immigrants was a key focus and drew loud cheers.

[…]

Even when his particular wording doesn't make headlines, Trump's speeches are full of false — and sometimes strange — rhetoric about migrants.

[…]

The speech went beyond immigration though, meandering toward many more of trump's grievances — yes, against Joe Biden, but also Fulton County, Ga., prosecutor Fani Willis, N.Y. Attorney General Letitia James, Megyn Kelly and Martha Stewart...to name a few.

In addition, he praised Hungarian autocrat Viktor Orban and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.”

The rallies are places where a movement largely defined by warrantless, baseless grievance can be together, away from facts and the truth, a safe place of rightwing disinformation and lies.

good article, but i see the trump rallies as closer to 'rasslemania' than anything as rational as a pep rally (where at least the cheerleaders have cleavage.)

I've been calling them pep rallies since 2015. He holds them because he likes to riff. It's where he's most comfortable. He knows his target audience and what they respond to. Low intelligence. Easily led. He can lie to them, and they eat it up.
The problem with these rallies are, 1) It's just the same grievance and rage rally after rally. Even the faithful get bored with the same old message, 2) As has been said in the past, the ability to pack a stadium does not equate to electoral popularity.
Just like constantly showing a red map of the US with a lot of empty space in counties....it doesn't add up to election wins.

I have a feeling there are a large amount of "groupies" who follow him around to these little events and pump his numbers up. :)

The twisted, and deeply deluded.

And a Biden rally has the feeling of a viewing. Then again, he is killing our country. MAGA

Well, given the choice between the two..Biden is.
He can at least answer a policy question cogently
. It might be a career politician answer, but it at least makes sense and stays on the topic.
Biden doesn't riff. Trump does. And that's where Trump's fitness for the job is called into question.

Trump wouldn't know a policy position if it ran up to him and stole his Quarter Pounder with Cheese. :)
You are such a cock sucking loser liar.

Policy and substance are always boring to people who need to be entertained.
Biden is a career politician. But he gets his message across.
Again, the details are always of no interest to people who have short attention spans. :)

We versus 'they'

“All afternoon, people queued for concessions and restrooms, chatting with their fellow Trump disciples.

But the mood darkened as Trump's opening act took the stage — a run of right-wing politicians. Their message was that the Trump movement has an endless string of enemies outside the arena.”

The Trump movement is a campaign of division, disinformation, and lies.

hey jones how has biden united everyone?...

A Potatohead rally has the feel of few homeless people lining up to sell their blood.

Why is it whenever I listen to the Trump Supporters, I’m always reminded of Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now?

He’s a great man. I’m a little man. Sounds just like the fanboys doesn’t it?
