The USS Liberty was flying a very large American flag and was in International waters.

Earlier in the day Israeli recon aircraft make a dozen low level passes and exchanged hand waves with the crew members on the deck.

The USS Liberty was a small surveillance vessel and was bristling with very tall antennas. There was no way it could have been mistaken for a merchant cargo ship as the Israeli government claims.

Official Israeli air force recordings have the pilots reporting that the ship is an American vessel. And the Israeli pilots were told by their commanders to continue with the planned attack.
