Why the American Right makes me sick

• There are few tribes more loathsome than the American right, and their vicious use of the shortcomings in the NHS to attack Barack Obama's attempts at health reform are a useful reminder.

I was thinking of this during a visit to my 91-year-old dad who is still in an NHS hospital after three weeks, recovering from a broken hip. He has had fantastic care, including a new metal hip, blood transfusions, different antibiotics to match every aspect of his condition; all administered by nurses who remain cheerful even when asked to perform tasks on men – the lethal combination of pain and old age makes some in the ward exceedingly grumpy – that I would not want to do for £1,000 a time. If he was in an American hospital he'd be using up half his life savings to get that standard of care, and few ordinary Americans could afford the insurance that would provide it. (This is because health insurers spend a large part of their income on PR against the "socialised medicine" and on sending pro forma letters explaining why your policy doesn't cover actual illness.) All over the US there are people whose lives are being destroyed for lack of proper health care provision, and there is no sight more odious than the rich, powerful and arrogant trying to keep it that way.

Who the fuck cares what this guy thinks? It's easy to sit on the outside and criticize, let him come live here for a few years then maybe his opinion will have some validity.

He probably won't, the cost of medical insurance could be prohibitive to him :D

But he doesn't need to live in the States to have an opinion on its health care Amanda. Lots of Americans who post here have never lived in Canada but can tell you all about Canadian health care ;)

Good, we don't need him. When you see me posting about Canada you can trot that line of logic out again. :)

Nah, I don't lie in wait for my next victim

Don't hold your breath Johnny come lately.

The funny thing about posters like you is that you've been here only moments and you think you know which way the wind blows. You haven't got a clue but it doesn't stop you from running your mouth. Try establishing yourself and figuring out who the players are before you embarrass yourself further.

I don't want to "know" you. :cuckoo:I am responding directly to what you post. Nothing more. I have plenty of little interwebz frenz I can hang with if I want to talk about how to cook pork chops or make candles........ if I feel the need.

You're responding to what I posted like a jackass. If you had any idea who I am or how I post you wouldn't have bothered with what you wrote. You're embarrassing yourself in front of the whole class. You're showing that you're nothing more than another partisan hack. :clap2:

That's pretty good advice actually. It's a pity that those in the USA who criticise another country's healthcare - politicians, the media and many on here - don't take it themselves.

I find it quite hilarious to read the distorted crap trotted out by some as they attempt to prop up their political ambitions with the usual misinformed drivel and downright lies about a system that few know anything about and most have never experienced.

No surprise there then. The Guardian hates anything and everything that is more than two degrees to the right of their left wing agenda. Don't let it upset you. There's not a lot in this world that doesn't make the British loony leftists sick. Shit! Half of them even hate themselves!

Okay!!!

Who gives a fuck, right?

Right?

Does it make you want to keep things as they are just to spite him?

No, I just don't think his opinion matters. I'm for making changes, just not the ones being suggested by either side. Although the Republican plan for healthcare change comes closer to what I would like to see than the Obama one. Although thats a little like saying the Pluto is closer to the sun than Alpha Centauri. Both are still a ways a way.

No, my overall point is that this guy is pointing out that someone who grew up in England, under their system of government, under the British social construct, with the opportunities afforded to him that are specific to the British, with the healthcare offered by the British government since its inception, under the British tax and monetary laws, wouldn't have made it under American healthcare? Well no shit sherlock. And the fact that the author admittedly is not an unbiased observer makes the whole article downright worthless.

The Brits' system works for them, the Canadian system works for them. But saying that either of those systems will work here without some major retooling is downright foolish.

To put it simply: There's a reason the British system is different from the French system which is different from the German one. They are sculpted to work within their society. To try and claim that one system is superior to one of the others because the other system wouldn't work for members of another society just pegs ya as stupid.
