Your memory does not serve you correctly. It is distorted and only remembers the version where it is compromised with spin.

The bakery had an advertised specialty of producing specially designed cakes. When they refused to produce a specially designed cake for a gay couple they broke laws passed by the state legislature to protect against this exact type of what the state had declared discrimination. The bakers had agreed to adhere to all state laws and regulations when they applied for a license. They, hence, broke their contract with the state.

Case of trouble makers in a business where intoxication by alcoholic beverages is present is totally different. In that case the legislature passed laws that gave the owners discretion to refuse service to anyone whose presence might cause a public disturbance and or put customers in danger or injury. In other words, some pissed off drunk may start a fight and an uninvolved patron might become collateral damage. The owners had an obligation to stop that scenario from occurring by removing the source of the trouble.
