7 in 10 Americans oppose data centers built near where they live

Can't say for everyone but we welcomed a NG fired power plant and medium industry.

I doubt heavy industry would be all that welcome due to the bad experience with a FMC Rayon plant we had.
I would MUCH rather have a data center than a NG fired power plant or Rayon plant a mile away from me. Wouldn't even be close.

LOL We are already in the position of begging other nations for data as the Trump admin continues to shut down our scientific research on the oceans and climate. It is going to take at least a decade to catch back up. You defend the data centers on the need for more data processing, yet seem to forget that they require massive water and electrical resources. And at present, the attitude of those wanting to build them is that they have the right to take both from the people where the data centers will be built.
Oceans and climate?... and you get DATA from that how?...
Are you still sold on man made climate change???
wow...

And the real irony is, I wonder how many that scream against Data Centers (in RL and in here) also rely heavily upon AI to give them answers and talking points for their claims.

I think one of the funniest posts in here was not long ago when somebody made a post as to why data centers were bad. And it was literally copy and pasted from ChatGPT.

Only in the last couple of years did I start to realize that kind of idiocy was becoming common.

Data centers make green energy obsolete. Its the climate change fanatics that are attacking data centers

Yeah lets just let China beat us in AI.... thank God these Americans were not alive at the start of WW2... sacrifice for your nation you stingy pigs.... ever heard of that?... stop fearing everything the news tells you to fear....
I don’t really agree with your tone, but I agree with the underlying sentiment. Make way for the future. AI is going to change everything. We will adapt to any problems along the way.

Let people who live near prospective sites vote on them. If the site is voted down then it's a no go. Try another place.

Why? Here is now my question, what gives people the right to "vote" on things like this? Or do you think the country should be run like an HOA with a bunch of Karen's on the board?

Some goofballs in government were trying to put a battery factory (increase a hive of bees fifteen yards away makes by a million times) next to small time Doss, Texas.

Watch your commissions, boys and girls. We just threw ours out in the primaries, and we are starting over.

Democratic republican government means the people in a district vote for representatives to make these decisions.

What if the majority of people dont want it there? Are you all for trampling over them?

What use are they? Data. Data on what, on whom? I live in the middle of nowhere, and my co-op electric bill is $400.00 a month. They want to put a center not far from here, which means skyrocketing electric bills if there is any electric left at all, and the large creek that runs through my property will be sucked dry. They are ecological nightmares...

Yes, which is enacted via things like zoning laws. I can see not putting things like a paint factory next to a residential neighborhood, this is why we zone industrial different than we do residential. And even zone light industrial different than heavy industrial.

But wanting to babysit every little thing, that is not "representation", that is "nanny state" and NIMBYism.

What if they build a power plant to meet their needs and help lower your power bill? Then what would you say?

OK, let's imagine that this is Wilmington, North Carolina. And everybody there just loves Pepsi, and does not want a Coca-Cola bottler opening up because they will compete with their favorite brand. Or that the majority of people are Baptist or Mormons, and do not want to allow a new Budweiser bottling plant because they are opposed to alcohol.

Exactly how much control do we give up to a "Government"?

This is exactly what makes many HOAs a nightmare. Where you buy a house in one, and suddenly they decide that you parking your own work truck with "ABC Plumbing" on the side is a "commercial" and you are not allowed to have advertising in your driveway.

What about the rights of those that buy that land and want to build on it, are you free with trampling on their rights?

One has to be extremely careful of the use of "rights", because that is a two-way street. It seems you actually are in favor of trampling on the rights of people, so long as they are not "your people".

What do data centers matter as opposed to an auto factory? Is it only the power and water issue?

The thing is, they really have no idea what they are talking about. They were told to be angry about something, so they are angry.

If they really "cared", then each and every one of them would cut all access to the "internet". Those "data centers" run so much of their lives, but they have absolutely no concept. Want a car to come pick them up, data centers are involved. Want a pizza and soda delivered to their house, data centers are involved. Want to watch some movie streaming to their house, data centers are involved.

Communicating with others on a forum like this one? Yep, data centers are involved.

Unless they happen to live in Bend, Oregon they are going to have a hell of a time watching movies at home if they actually want "data centers" out of their life. Especially as increasingly the POTS infrastructure is being removed and everything is digital. Even the cable companies went all-digital decades ago. I think the last time I actually was able to get analog style signals from a cable company was in 2008. And that was only when I lived in the barracks, because the infrastructure in place on base was older than in the surrounding community. I could actually hook up my TV directly to the cable and tune channels with the TV tuner.

When my wife joined me a few months later and we moved to a house out in town, that no longer worked and we had to use their cable box to handle all channels. And we had to pay for a box on each TV we hooked up.

This little argument actually fascinates me. These people do not realize they are the ultimate Luddites, and they are screaming and throwing their wooden shoes into things they really do not understand at all.
