Over 70% of Americans say they’re opposed to the building of artificial intelligence data centers in their locality, a new poll from Gallup has revealed.
Nearly half of respondents (48%) said they “strongly oppose” data centers being built near where they live, and 23% said they’re “somewhat opposed.” Meanwhile, 20% said they “somewhat favor” them, and only 7% are strongly in favor.
“Most Americans appear to be adopting a ‘not in my backyard’ attitude to building additional data centers, and that attitude is especially intense, given that nearly half strongly oppose that construction,” Gallup Senior Editor Jeffrey M. Jones said about the results.
Of those opposed to data centers, 50% cited concerns over their effects on resources, 22% mentioned concerns over quality-of-life, 20% mention effects on costs, and 16% cited pollution.
Of those favoring data centers, 66% mentioned benefits to local economies, 17% cited technological benefits, and 23% mentioned other reasons.
When broken down by political party, 75% of Democrats oppose data centers to some degree, while 74% of Republicans also oppose them.
Ha! I told you opposition to Data Centers was not a Right vs Left issue....It's a quality of life issue and people know when they are being screwed-over by tech robber barons.
People are not buying the "Mah China" stalking horse either.
