Tom Cotton Floats Universal Basic Income for Coronavirus Crisis

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) is floating a plan to “get cash into the hands of affected workers and their families” due to national shutdowns of businesses in nearly every industry from the coronavirus outbreak.

In a series of posts online and in a Fox News Channel interview, Cotton said American workers who are being forced to stay home from their jobs due to shutdowns in the midst of the coronavirus crisis need immediate relief in the form of cash payments.

The monetary policy, known as Universal Basic Income (UBI), has made its way into the national spotlight over the last year thanks to businessman Andrew Yang. The policy could mean that American citizens affected by the coronavirus shutdowns would get $1,000 a month in cash.

Cotton suggested using existing social welfare agencies to put “cash in the hands of affected families.”

“We don’t want to see layoffs, we want to see people who are at home, if they have any reason to be at home, supported immediately,” Cotton said.
We dont need a new program

lol that's was your dissembling attempt at avoiding answering my points, I never brought that up, so I think you're purposely not able to refute the facts that few jobs being created require anything beyond 4th grade educations

Picaro, I respect you for being open and defending your love of bigger more muscular govt and Universal Everything and having the Swamp make EVERYONE'S lives completely risk free.. You've been more reasonable in the past when I've read your stuff.. But I can not believe that last paragraph..

OF COURSE you didn't bring up the people doomed to dead end jobs because you're not TRYING to fix poverty.. You're papering it over with checks from DC... OR ELEVATING WAGES instead of people.. AYE brought it up...

And as far as that comment about "few jobs being created require anything beyond a 4th grade level" -- that's just imaginary.. And I WISH we could have a better discussion, but not with those random stinky herrings...

Yes, you social darwinists do lose these discussions all the time, not much ammo there to work with. While 'business' goes about making it's world risk free, you much prefer to avoid the effects of those policies over time. Your strawmen don't really take attention away from the fact that right wing 'economics' is just so much magical chanting no less false than left wing 'economics'. and this is why candidates like Trump can barely squeak by left wingers, and will eventually lose to them in the next 10-20 years.

During this crises we should do what ever is possible to contain & end the virus, All measures should be Temporary, our government always adds policy's that are not good for the general public then leave them in place when the crises is over. Cant even say why, yet don't think when things return to normal we should just hand out money to every one. will have to think about that.

Whers the option to just stop welfare programs?
Are you serious?

Remove the entire social safety net?

no

Actually I am serious. I think it’s unsustainable as is and secondly it funds an oligarchy who use our wealth to maintain rule over us. it will end itself if we don’t.

Something has to replace it of course. Starting with families.

Even as libertarian as I am, I KNOW some people will never be "net earners"... Whether their fault or not, given the expansive govt we've allowed, a FRACTION of the budget for a safety is not my biggest problem.. My biggest problem with CHRONIC welfare is that this should never COME FROM DC.. This is a local/state issue and if the Feds want to help -- it should be BLOCK granted and let the local/state govt take the heat for WASTING that money on people who CAN be "net earners"...

Only use for Darwin here is to laugh at the demise of folks that put rockets on their car and end up going over a cliff... At least I WANT a discussion with a principled socialist - but a discussion without sincerity and solutions that can be explained -- just never cut it.. I've had MARATHON discussions with the Green people and honest Socialists.. A LOT of them.. But only a few could actually persist beyond slogans and memes...

So when you just blurt out that "most recent jobs being created are 4th grade level", I'm not wasting time correcting that sophistry...

Friedman had some interesting ideas, he was wrong on China .

Friedman was 10000 % right on China. He said that if they switched to Republican capitalism 100's of million would get rich rather than starve to death under libsocialism.
He literally saved 100 of millions of lives, perhaps more than any other man in human history!!
