Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner announced charges on Friday against three former homicide detectives who made false statements that contributed to the wrongful conviction of a man who spent 25 years in prison for a rape and murder he did not commit.
The former detectives — Manuel Santiago, Martin Devlin and Frank Jastrzembski — played significant roles in the 1993 conviction of Anthony Wright, who has since been exonerated by DNA evidence. They repeated their false claims decades later during a retrial that could have kept the innocent man in prison. The former detectives were charged with perjury and false swearing in official matters after a grand jury presentment recommending the charges was unsealed on Friday.

“After hearing testimony from key witnesses and reviewing evidence, the Grand Jury recommended that Santiago, Devlin, and Jastrzembski be held accountable for lying under oath to condemn an innocent man and cover up their wrongdoing, and for perverting the integrity of law,” Krasner said Friday.
It is exceedingly rare for law enforcement officials to face criminal prosecution in relation to their roles in wrongful convictions. But reviewing wrongful convictions has been a key agenda item for Krasner, one of the leaders of the progressive prosecutor movement. In 2018, his office created the Conviction Integrity Unit, which has helped secure exonerations for 22 people. At least 18 of the exonerated were Black men. The detectives charged on Friday worked on at least four of the cases that the Conviction Integrity Unit has helped overturn.

The jury acquitted Wright of all charges after less than an hour of deliberations. Wright was freed after spending 25 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

What should be the punishment for these cops?

This is a prime example of the US Justice System, if not for this DA this man would probably be back in jail. That is where the old DA wanted for him.

What is the price on 25yrs of this man's life that was taken?

No price can be placed on someone's life this is time he will never get back! I absolutely do believe he should be compensated so he can learn how to fit back into society, etc This is a shame I can only imagine how he feels god bless him! wow

They must pay a price for this, it's disgusting.

As a firm believer in the tenet that "thou shalt bear false witness", I'm confident they will pay a price in their next lives...

25 years and a day, for the detectives, if found guilty sounds about right.

I give him six months till he screws up again. If I were the local police chief I would watch him like a hawk. You can't really trust felons, especially after they have been to criminal college.
You CAN'T comprehend what the thread is about OR you're just RACIST this innocent man DIDN'T commit any crime in the first place so that's the whole point of him being released from prison! MEANING he is NOT a FELON never was a FELON he was charged for a crime HE DID NOT COMMIT! his record will be expunged

Please point out one thing I said that was racist. One.

How do you know for sure that he does not have any prior convictions?

How do you know he was not already a felon at the time of arrest for this crime?

As of right now, until his record is officially expunged, he is still a felon, and should probably be watched as such.

Actions speak louder than words you didn't have to say your racist for anyone to realize you're!
I am speaking on facts stated from this report, his record of First-degree murder charge will be expunged just because he's black doesn't mean he has a record this goes to show your character!

So you want to punish the man because 3 crooked cops got caught doing wrong. It's amazing how you don't care that 3 cops lied and sent an innocent man to prison for 25yrs. It is not surprising though.

True, that's why I think you're a dipshit.

That's true...very true...in this case. I would like to see what his previous convictions looked like. Plus he spent the last 25 years at criminal college so, he must be monitored if we are to be extra safe.

Why would you AssUMe that he was a felon?
I am not assuming. I am asking the question. Was he a previous offender? If he was, instead of '''RRRRRAAAAAAAACCCCISM!!!''' there may have been other circumstances that may have lent to the police initially suspecting him.

The penalty for prosecutorial misconduct must be life-ruining. They should serve the same sentence.

1. What was the lies that they told?

2. How did the DNA exonerate the man?

3. Why did neither the article or the OP answer the most important questions on this issue?

Was Wright a model citizen prior to his arrest for rape?
