I bet there ain't 2% of millennium educated kids who understand how the Star Spangled Banner Anthem was created or give a shit for that matter. The Brits took advantage of a lull in the never ending European tribal wars around 1812 and decided to try to regain control over the Colonies. They burned the Capital and got their asses kicked by "Old Hickory" in New Orleans. An American, Francis Key, tried to intervene with the Brits over the capture of an American citizen and he was imprisoned on a British ship while they shelled Ft. Henry. His observations of the shelling of Ft. Henry in Baltimore Harbor is the basis of the poem.I wonder how many people know that there were other stanzas of the poem which might have been relevant in 1814 but have become politically incorrect 200 years later. "Then conquer we must if the cause is just and this be our motto, in God is our trust.".

you mean to say that a millennium is educating kids? Which one?

The star Spangled Banner is almost impossible to sing and glorifies war. They should change the anthem to America the Beautiful.

I tell my kids all the time..But I don't know if they remember? Maybe they should learn the song also?

It is a tome. And a most well-written tome for it's time, Tim.
And I am sure you have memorized it? How about America the Beautiful? Memorized all of the song in it's entirety..??.

SSB, yes. ATB, no.

You have just earned your second *****-slap of the evening. :slap:

Did anyone watch the Baltimore celebration on PBS? I watched it with my MIL, a naturalized citizen. It led to some great discussion. I found the one presenter (the singer, not Lithgow) annoying, but otherwise, beautiful. The Navy Chanters needed more mics, though. It was hard to hear them over the fireworks and the opera singer.

In case you were in a coma for the last decade the term "millennium generation" refers to Americans who came of age after the millinnium or the year 2000.
