First 'e-cigarette child death': New York baby dies after drinking liquid nicotine






Calls to change way e-cigarettes refills are marketed and bottled in wake of 'tragic accident'

A one-year-old baby has died in New York state after drinking from what is thought to have been an e-cigarette refill bottle, prompting calls to change how the liquid nicotine products are presented.


The death was described by local police as a “tragic accident”, and is thought to be the first to involve a child and e-cigarettes.

An ambulance was called to a home in Fort Plain, New York, to reports of an “unresponsive” child last Tuesday, ABC News reported. He was rushed to hospital, but pronounced dead a short while later.

How very sad.

1. "Liquid nicotine" is not used in any vapor product. E-liquid contains a maximum of 3.6% liquid nicotine by volume. Even a small child like the one in question would need to consume several large (30ml) bottles of high-strength e-liquid in order to ingest a potentially lethal dose of nicotine, and they'd start vomiting uncontrollably before they even got through the first bottle. 2. If this child actually dropped dead of acute nicotine toxicity without having vomited, then everything we've learned about nicotine in the last 150 years was wrong, and the textbooks will have to be rewritten. 3. Getting e-liquid in your mouth is a decidedly unpleasant experience. No person, of any age, would taste a drop of it and have any inclination to drink an entire bottle, much less several bottles.

I am more prone to think a parent tried to murder the kid with the nicotine, than that a one year old got into the stuff and drank enough to die.
