The Democratic Party had a Southern conservative wing, and a Northern liberal wing. The Southern conservative wing has been absorbed into the Republican Party, in large part due to the GOP's highly successful "Southern Strategy".

The Democratic Party has since then polarized toward the Left, while the GOP has polarized toward the Right.

The democrats opposed all civil rights bills up to 1965 when LBJ realized he had to give the n...er a little something to shut them up.
