Why is reality TV popular?

I honestly do not understand why people would watch this crap. Why don't people want shows with good stories? Did the collective IQ of Americans drop? Seriously why would people choose this crap over a well written drama?

Have you ever watched Hardcore Pawn, or Lizard Lick Towing? My God son they are funny. I mean completely staged of course, but God hilarious.
