The government charges $200 to take it.
$300 of it vanishes into something else.
The government charges $200 to give it to you.
You get your $1000.

Now $700 got wasted so you should have only gotten $300.

This happens b/c the government borrowed some of the money, which devalues the dollar, and printed some, which devalues the dollar.

So that $1000 is actually worth $1000 when you needed $1000.

I looked up that article. What he was doing was citing a study he had read. The site didn't offer much context as to why Bernie was mentioning it. He may have believed it, but I really don't see what the big deal is. It's not like he pulled it out of his ass like that republican who said a woman's body shuts down after rape. He read it in a journal on psychosomatic medical conditions.
