Since WE have not done so, WE must shoulder lots of responsibility.

In that (correct) view of things, WE did place our troops in lots of places all over the globe. And of course our opinions regarding the decision to go into Iraq was sought.

The Gulf war was to protect Kuwait which was brutally invaded by Iraq. And it was also to protect Saudi Arabia which was threatened by Sadam. None of these countries prior to 9/11 were occupied in any way shape or form by the US!

Don't be so sure.

Long before the 9/11 attack took place Usama bin Laden made it clear that U.S. aggression against the Arab nations took the form of U.S. support of Israel's expansion into Gaza, Israel's brutal treatment of the Palestinians and the continued presence of U.S. military forces on the holy ground of Mecca. He warned us as early as 1998 that if these aggressions continued there would be massive retaliation. But we ignored the warning.

Shortly after the 9/11 attack, Bush quietly removed the bin Sultan Air Force Base from Saudi Arabia (bin Laden, as well as fifteen of the nineteen 9/11 shahids, are Saudi) and he pressured Sharon to withdraw settlers from the Gaza region (with cash compensation from the U.S. taxpayers).

The bottom line is our aggressive conduct in the Middle East is what provoked the 9/11 attack. We can't just impose our will on people and not expect them to retaliate sooner or later.
