Based on existing federal gun laws, Kelley’s record made him officially ineligible to buy firearms. But the Air Force failed to submit his records into the federal background-check database, allowing him to purchase the guns used in this weekend’s rampage.

Folks, that’s an unacceptable “oops.” It also isn’t an isolated incident of negligence. This week, questions have arisen about the military’s reporting system when it comes to domestic-violence cases. Meanwhile, in an interview after the shooting, Texas senator Ted Cruz noted that in 2010 alone, “48,000 felons and fugitives lied and illegally tried to purchase guns. [The government] prosecuted only 44 of them.”

Gun Control and Magical Thinking

But .. but .. passing new Laws is so much fun and feels so self-congratulatory ...

FYI - The government can NOT control guns, it's impossible. Anyone that wants a gun, can get a gun. With enough money, and the right contacts, a person can own any gun they want, and as many as they want.

For Example:
Members of law enforcement sell guns, steal guns, and carry untraceable guns.
Guns enter the U.S. illegally and are sold on the black market.
Guns are sold from the trucks of cars, at flea markets, yard sales, and between family members.
Guns are sold and traded over the internet.
Guns are handed down through families.
Guns are made, modified, and sold in garages and basements.

It's impossible to legislate guns off of our streets, and out of the hands of individuals that want them. Criminals do not care about laws. Gang members do not care about laws. The mentally unstable do not care about laws. If the government can't keep illegal drugs from citizens, how are they going to keep guns from citizens.

( A side note: I purchased a gun from an individual through the internet, paid $125 for it. It's untraceable. )
