Though black citizens didn’t like them, there was nothing they could do about it

You mention only "Black Culture" and "Southern Culture" which seems to be synonymous with "Southern White Culture." I don't see how African-Americans who have been in the south for generations would be so fond of "Southern White Culture." In fact, the U.S. has so many different cultures present and thriving that we could never come up with any sort of consensus as to what "American Culture" would be comprised of. We have to be "everybody" because, in fact, we are everybody. I don't know where you are, but I suggest that you do some traveling around your own country and visit all the people. I don't understand why you don't want to join in with your fellow Americans.

It is the school body that does not want to be "with their fellow Americans". THey are erasing the name given to their school by the people who built the school, long ago, ie "their fellow Americans".
