Vegas must see places?

I just booked a flight to Vegas Aug 3-Aug 10. I have an uncle that lives about 5 miles off the strip and I'll be staying with him.

This will be my first time in Vegas. Any Vegas pros who have any suggestions on where to go/what to see? I need some good (cheap) bars too because I plan on not remembering at least half my vacation.

Hey lil.....

I live in Vegas out in the Summerlin section (Northwest of the Strip).

The Palms is cool, but can get expensive. I am not sure which side of town you are staying on (generally, those that live east of the strip stay east and west of it west), so I am gonna assume west and start naming some cool places.

Plush is a new bar that is pretty cool and it is located in the JW Marriott Resort on Rampart in Summerlin. It is pretty cool and cheap. The crowd is a good mix of young and old, single and couples, etc.

Closer in, the Rio used to be a hopping place, but I am not so sure any more. The Palms is across the street and west about a 1/4 mile on Flamingo. If you are east of the strip, Green Valley Ranch is a pretty nice spot. It is on the opposite side of town from Summerlin, so I have only been there once or twice but it gets a lot of good press.

If you have time, try to go out to Mountain Springs Saloon on a Saturday evening. It can get fun this time of year. Mountain Springs is a small community located in the mountain pass between Las Vegas and Pahrump (not that you would care, but that is where the legalized prostitution is located). As you are heading to Pahrump the Mountain Springs Saloon is located on the right side right at the top of the pass. You will see a sign that says "World Famous Mountain Springs Saloon. You will know you are in the right place when you see all the Harleys parked out front.

I'll definitely check out that Saloon. My uncle is a bike lover so I'm sure he knows where it is. He works as a Pediatric Intensive Care Nurse at Las Vegas Hosp. He was featured in some sort of magazine for people who look "dont look the part" of their careers as he has hair down to his ass, gets his pants special orderd so they still have the 70s flare, and rides his Harley to work. He's awesome tho.

You'll have to let me know where their street is as compared to the places you listed. I never really thought of Vegas being "big" (I'm sure it is)... I'm from a small town of less than 1,000. I think I'm in for a rude awakening. LOL.

lil', Shadow Mountain Place isn't too far from JW Marriott or the strip so it is pretty well located. I am sure your uncle knows of the Mountain Springs Saloon if he rides a lot and it sounds like he does!

Vegas is big but not that big compared to other cities (the valley has close to 2 million people now). It is just that when you live here, you generally don't go to the other side of town. Both sides have nice places, but it seems like if you are a Summerlin person, you hate Green Valley and visa-versa. Plus everything is so planned here that you get used to being stuck in your own neighborhood or going from home to work to home (strip once in a while). My office is less than five miles from my house so I almost never go to the strip unless I am going to play golf or see friends or have visitors.

Well i've been to Vegas lots of times but I like the newer trendier places. Of course if you want to splurge one night go to the Bellagio for dinner, its out of this world! I also like The Venetian and Paris but usually stay at the MGM Grand.

I usually go to play golf too but don't know if you are into that so I won't go into it but Vegas has some spectacular courses.

Bellagio has Le Cirque and Picassos. Both are excellent restaurants, but be ready to pony up (Le Cirque is min $100 per person and Picasso is more). The Venetian is better than the Paris in my opinion and the Mandalay Bay is nice too with a good crowd.

Absolutely! I'm guessing you are a member there at TPC Summerlin? Last time I was there in '01 me, my brother and my old man played a Tom Fazio course just across the Calif. border, can't remember the name now, we played Reflection Bay and the Dye course out at the indian Reservation. Awesome golf!

Funny story, my old man had said he would buy all the green fees at one of the courses as his treat, shit me and my brother made tee times at Shadow Creek! 500 bucks a round! We pussed out at the last second and canceled them, wouldn't want him to have a coronary in the pro shop! :

You are right about the Bellagio places, friggin spendy but when in Rome!

I live (well, did, just sold my house) on the TPC Summerlin course but my wife and I belong to the Las Vegas Country Club (located behind the Hilton Las Vegas and the oldest club in Las Vegas). Steve Wynn keeps trying to buy us out. Three weeks ago I got a letter from Wynn Resorts and they were offering $50K a member. They just raised it to $91K a member. We keep voting no as the real estate alone puts the memberships at about $250K each not to mention that we own our own water rights (which in Vegas is like owning a gold mine). My wife and I paid $30K for our membership in 1995. I am waiting for him to offer us $375K each (estimated value of the land and water rights combined) and then I will sell. Short of that, we are getting ripped off in my opinion.

Yeah.....there's a McDonald's in the Luxor, Little Caesar's too.

That's where I stayed, at 'The Hotel', the new addition in the back. Beautiful hotel, beautiful casino, beautiful cocktail waitresses. The only drawback is that if you want to be in the middle of it all it's at the very end of the strip, so you've got a bit of a walk.

So very true. The best play to be to be in the middle of everything is either the venetian or the mirage.

Hey.. thanks for the tips guys!! I think I'll go with Zhokov and check out the Little Ceasers & McDonalds, .... I dont plan on eating out much (staying with family... they can grill me some good ol fashioned Vegas steaks) and they have a pool so my only venturing away will be down to the strip to maybe gamble with $100 and check out the night life. Any meal that costs $100 is gonna hop on my plate, skin itself, cook it self and then feed me.

(on the night life thing... I'll stay away from Zhukov's suggestion... the 'well, nevermind' says it all)

My best friend and I are going and we have tight budgets so we're looking for cheeeeap stuff. Like I said, small town girl here. I can walk in a bar and get a bottle of beer for $1.25. I'll be the cheap girl sitting on the casino floor gambling on the nickel slots for the free beer.

then go to the JW Marriott casino. It is small, nice, clean and it has a nice bar in it (Plush). You can play the 5 cent slots and drink as many drinks as you want (just make sure you tip the waitress at least $1 a drink and she will keep them coming) and every now and again drop into the bar and check things out. being a young one, you won't have any problems getting in and out without having to pay a cover.

Make sure you wear those pants and that top in your avatar and i will be looking for ya!

The pricier casinos have higher limits on their tables and machines. Outside the slot machines I don't think there was anything at the Mandalay where you could bet less than $10. Right on the floor (as opposed to VIP rooms) they had $1000 tables. I'm sure places like the Bellagio/Mirage/Venetian are even more.

The Excalibur (looks like a big cheesy castle) had $5 tables for roulette, craps, blackjack, et cetera. They also had a bar near the sports section with $3.50 beers, which me and my buddy were double fisting all day Sunday 'cause we had already dropped too much on the tables and were sick of gambling. I'm sure there are other older casinos that might be even cheaper. Tropicana, places like that.

Sure you can drink for free playing nickle slots, but don't expect to see the waitress very often.


Things to see: The Luxor is cool just cause it's a pyramid, New York, New York has a roller coaster out front, the whole building looks cool too, theres a giant Eifel tower in front of Paris, the fountains in front of the Bellagio are cool, and did I mention Tatiana?

Zhuk is right to an extent, the casinos have the 5 dollar tables out during the day when people are more likely to be doing their sightseeing and shopping then bump the lows up to 10 sometimes 20 at night when people are ready to party and gamble, its simply good, smart business.

A tip though, even if you are just playing nickel slots hit the cocktail waitress with generous tips for the free beers she brings you and you will be drunker than a skunk in no time because she will be around every fifteen minutes.
