While the words used were literally 'young woman' it had the same context and implied meaning of 'virgin' through its use, much like 'young maiden' used to have in our culture.

Let's look at the mythology without clouding it with debates about how semen could possibly fertilize an egg from the other side of the room. The Bible says Yahweh, the deity of the tribes of Israel, and Jesus are the same thing. Therefore Yahweh/Jesus chose Mary and impregnated Mary resulting in Jesus in human form. The 99 year old Joseph was baffled by the pregnancy since there was no Viagra at that time. So Jesus was his "father" and his "son" at the same time. That is where the "bridegroom" weirdness comes into play. So, to put the jewish mythology bluntly, Jesus inseminated Mary (through her ears?) to have himself as the offspring only for him to battle against his desire to do it again in human form. A strange variation of the Oedipus Complex.
