No, I did not know it. When my late husband and I visited Puerto Rico after he retired, it was a foreign country that had turned down statehood twice. The second time we went, a hurricane had destroyed a lot of the homes in the central area of the island country, left others without roofs, and destroyed the national zoo. I gathered from the locals they just weren't interested in statehood and let it go at that. I did not know we were recruiting military personnel from a country that was as disinterested in statehood as the local people seemed to agree on. That's where I got the idea Puerto Rico was not a state, and that our country does not own them. We were in San Juan and speaking with a kindly shopkeeper. That was reinforced by one of my husband's professional engineering society who was born in Puerto Rico but married an American woman who also happened to be a member of the Casper Artists Guild of which I am a lifetime member for donating a quilt for a raffle one summer that earned enough to keep their doors open for a year. They didn't have to do that, but people in that part of the country are just dear hearts and gentle people, and I'd do anything for them, really.

I will always be interested in what people tell me when I am a guest in their country. The only association I ever had with the military were through my father, grandfather, and brother who not only served a combined total of 50 years, but my grandfather and grandmother spent the rest of their post WWI life fundraising for his brothers in battle who were severely wounded and depended on the veteran associations dedicated to helping all those who served and got severely hurt for it. They're all dead now, but I can still make quilt tops and I spend a minimum of 60 hours a week to this day making quilts for the needy in my community here in Texas.
