The purchase price of incandescent bulbs is lower, even though longer life and lower cost of operation makes the new style much cheaper in the long run. Just another example of how everything seems to be rigged to cost the poor more to survive than the well off.

It may seem that way because of price point, but it's really not.

LED bulb energy cost over 20 years: $34

LEDs use 75% less energy. This seems like a no-brainer, no matter what economic class you belong to.

When you are literally worried about whether you have the money to feed your kids and keep a roof over their head this week, a few pennies makes a difference. Your total cost after 20 years doesn't matter as much as what you can do right now.

So use other bulbs. What's stopping you?

I like the fact that I can put a lightbulb in and don't have to replace it for years. It's very convenient especially since I'm short and changing lightbulbs in high places isn't something that I like to do.

Yep. I had most of the specialty fixtures in the house I built made specifically for LEDs. Everything else I screwed in LED bulbs. The light spectrum issues people complain about is old news too. The newer ones have a broader range than incandescent bulbs.

I made the switch to compact flourescent bulbs from incandescents back in 2005. Our electricity useage dropped by two thirds in the summer. We had electric heat in that house so the winter savings were only about 1/3 but those bulbs cut our useage enormously. Added to which, we only had ever replaced two CFB's by the time we moved - in 2013.

I replaced all of the bulbs in this apartment four years ago when I moved in, and I haven't replaced any of those CFB's at all. My electric bill is much lower than my neighbour who uses incandescents, even though I'm home all day, and he works.

Older incandescent light bulbs are not energy efficient, so most people will purchase bulbs that are more cost effective.

Fluorescent light bulbs are not very reliable, so they get tossed in the garbage about as often as incandescent ones. Since they have mercury in them, they pollute our landfills.

LED bulbs are becoming less expensive, are more reliable and do not contain mercury.
