President Donald Trump in April told Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte that the United States has two nuclear submarines stationed in Korean waters, according to several reports.

“We have a lot of firepower over there. We have two submarines, the best in the world,” Trump bragged to Duterte, according to reports by the New York Times and the Intercept. “We have two nuclear submarines, not that we want to use them at all.”

Trump asked the Philippine president whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is “stable or not stable,” according to those reports and one by the Washington Post, all of which cited a transcript of the call produced by the Philippine government.

He called Kim a “madman with nuclear weapons,” according to the reports, but said that at least “all his rockets are crashing.”

“That’s the good news,” Trump said, according to the Washington Post.

AFAIK, this is someone making something out of nothing. I recall there being an announcement of a Navy sub arriving in S. Korea at the end of April and another noting that one was docking in Japan somewhere. Japan and S. Korea are both close to the DPRK. It was also announced that we were sending a carrier group to the area of the Koreas, so you gotta figure that includes at least one sub if not a couple or three.

I don't know the exact dates of those announcements, but IIRC, they were all around the end of April and start of May. People who need precise dates can Google.or search the Navy's website.

There are surely a bunch of them on our Atlantic and Pacific coasts so we can track the visits of other nations' subs. Then there're the ones we have that we send to visit other countries. There're the ones that are ostensibly attached to carrier groups and there are the ones that we have just doing "stuff" not previously noted where "stuff" needs doing.

I used to work at a sub base many, many years ago. We were not allowed to reveal when any sub was scheduled to return to port or for how long. Yet, the local newspaper always seemed to print it
