Tolerance? Not for Christians...

What do you mean "they are not Muslim", Kalam? Are gay Muslims excommunicated? By whom?

Well not exactly, because there is no such thing as a gay Muslim. The Islamic lifestyle is strictly heterosexual, so a homosexual or a bisexual cannot be a Muslim because their sexual preferences preclude adherence to the religion's commandments. There is no central religious authority in Islam that handles things like excommunication so I suppose a gay person could call himself or herself a Muslim, but it would be akin to a meat-eater claiming to be a vegetarian.

An MD IS a degree in medicine.......
Yes, you're catching on now. MDs have no degree requirements outside of the MD. A psychiatrist is such because of the MD and board certification, and no psychology degree is needed. Similarly, a cardiologist is such because of the MD and board certification, without a "heart degree".

So in review: no type of doctor needs a psychology degree, and the DSM-IV does not change constantly.

I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about. A heart specialist must, by definition, specialize in the heart. Extra schooling. Not just an MD. A psychiatrist has not only a doctorate in medicine, but a degree in psychology. Ask one, he'll tell you. Having taken my kids to psychiatrists, yes, I've asked them.

I'm so sick of you thinking you know it all when it's obvious you have no clue, and you're calling me stupid, grow up, will you?

No I'm calling you stupid because you continue to make inaccurate statements about the medical world even after I show you proof you are wrong. You're like one of those rabid ignorant parents who claim vaccination causes autism, regardless of the proof. If the wikipedia links I posted aren't good enough for you, I can support what I'm saying with many other sources. You cannot.

Yes, all doctors need additional training past their MD. Cardiologists train in cardiology. Psychiatrists train in psychiatry. These are not degrees. Being a psychiatrist in no way requires a degree in psychology, just an MD and residency like all other practicing doctors.

Sorry hick but the jury's still out on whether vaccination causes autism. And how could anyone vaccinate their kids given the chance of developing autism? I know I didn't. Scary stuff.

I never thought the vaccines caused autism, right up until the patriot act passed. At the very last minute, they stuck on a rider that protects Ely Lily, the makers of thermerosol <the mercury preservative in the vaccines> from being sued specifically for causing autism. The politician responsible then retired. Many, many parents of autistic children were very upset and I think he knew he wasn't getting reelected after that.

I think the jury is still out. While I don't think the vaccines necessarily cause autism, I believe they are a trigger. I also know that the professionals in the autism world do not get their kids vaccinated until they turn 3, and then only one at a time...oh if only I had it to do over again.

The jury is not out in any major medical group or organization in every single state in this country. It came back a while ago, and it very specifically showed that there is absolutely no causal relationship. This is accepted as fact by The American Medical Association, The Immunization Safety Review Committee, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Center for Disease Control, to name a few. The original article that even made the guess that there was an association was retracted from publication.

The only people who think the jury is still out are uneducated laypeople who draw conclusions not from medical knowledge, but from scary rumors.

So you didn't think they cause autism until a political group that was not medically trained protected a medical group from wrongful lawsuits? I also couldn't help but notice that you decided to stop making comments about psychiatrists and their degrees. Should I take it to mean you realize the fault?

A psychiatrist doesn't need a degree in psychiatry. My niece considered going into psychiatry because she enjoyed working at the mental hospital. She wouldn't have required any additional education to become a psychiatrist, she would just have to do her residency in a psych ward, supervised by psychiatrists.

At least that's what I thought.

I'm revisiting this thread because the text book for my current class (Models of Effective Helping - it's a psych course) goes into detail about the requirements of a clinician regarding whether or not they have to "approve" of lifestyle choices.

What I found in my reading is that psychologists and other clinicians are in NO WAY obligated to "approve" of the lifestyle of their clients. If they use a humanistic approach, they will maintain an open relationship with their client and provide them with unconditional ACCEPTANCE (not approval) which mimics love. They in no way are obligated to voice approval over choices, and are free to state their own feelings about things (when appropriate)..
