The Real Reason Walmart Raised Its Minimum Wage

Obviously, there hasn’t been any time for any of that to happen yet. So if the money is going out this soon, and this obviously, the mechanism is very different from what I’d have expected. And instead of heralding this as great news, the Trump administration should be quite alarmed.

For if companies really have nothing better to do with the money than give an unnecessary bonus to current workers, that means that companies don’t see great opportunities to use it to expand their current operations, or invest in exciting new inventions and markets. Instead they’re just going to split it with workers and shareholders.

I already saw this on my msn home page. A democrat propaganda piece.

Lower unemployment raises in wages. Any Trump supporters already knew that. Try and catch up will you?

YOU have to read the whole article.
It seems the law of supply and demand is working. In a tight labor market, employers must raise wages it they are to keep and attract workers.

The fact that worker participation rates have not changed in a tight labor market, my have something to do with the fact that the USA has an extensive welfare system. Has it not been proven that many on welfare, make more than those working low paid jobs?

From the referenced article:
The Trump administration obviously enjoys hearing companies announce that they’re giving employees more money because of the tax cut.
And companies have little incentive not to make such assertions because Trump's susceptibility to flattery is well known and has oft been proven. Who wouldn't say something vaguely encomiastic and that makes little difference whether they utter it or don't, and that, absent the very confidential conversations among the handful of executives who know the actual reasons for their actions, cannot be contradicted on points of factually shown intent, were they of the mind that doing so might gain them leverage of some sort with the shallow and vindictive man who currently is POTUS? Regardless of what they think of him, the man is POTUS, which makes him very powerful; thus he must be "managed," and one way of doing so is abundantly clear: flatter him, directly or, so shallow is he, indirectly.

In this case, there’s good reason to think that Walmart needed to raise wages anyway: Labor markets are tight, and in a number of areas, the company is now contending with locally imposed minimum wages that are already forcing Walmart to raise wages to $11 an hour, or even higher. Establishing a higher floor across the company ensures parity between regions, and allows Walmart stores to compete for good workers in local markets.
Insofar as they were likely raising wages regardless of the tax plan, may as well say something nice about Trump and his poorly designed tax legislation. (Note: I don't fault Trump for the design; I fault him for signing the bill rather than vetoing it and sending it back for Congress to alter it so as to produce a better designed piece of legislation.)

They are easier to control when they are broke and relying on the government.

Well it really depends on which states you read and what they cover, every state is different. Why work a low paying job if they are just going to cut your Snap and health ins right out?? That is how most Rep. states are, not all. Make a buck over and it stops. One could argue let these people live in the streets and go hungry, I guess one can look at it as putting money in the system.

Meanwhile, Democrats have implemented a reform that actually does help to address the poverty trap issue. The Affordable Care Act, when it's implemented next year, will make it possible for people on Medicaid to go back to work without fearing loss of health insurance. It will turn what benefit cliffs exist in the Medicaid program into a gradual slope, so nobody will have to fear that an extra dollar of income will make them uninsured.

That is, the Affordable Care Act will do this except in Republican-led states that are rejecting the Medicaid expansion. In those states, the welfare-versus-work tradeoff will be more tilted toward welfare, and a cliff in Medicaid benefits will still be providing a disincentive to take a job.

Not true, most people do not want to live like that, but have no choice.

Exactly, they don't want people to get more money, they don't want racial harmony... When that happens they lost the fight.

Well its not due to the Trump Admin and the tax cut. That was the point of this article.

Once again in your world you think people don't want a job and a chance?

Of course. However, no one is arguing that the poor should live in the streets and go hungry.

No the article was not spin but truth, the wage hike was not due to the tax cut, as it has not taken effect , and also they laid off 11000 Sams employees. What do you suggest they do?

The tax cut was to promote more jobs , not be a conduit of Gov- corp- handout to employees.
