The idiocy of banning plastic grocery bags

I go to the supermarket and buy produce that I put in little plastic bags, greens that come in a plastic tub, ketchup and mustard that come in plastic bottles but I can't use a plastic bag to carry all these items that are packaged in plastic out of the store.
The problem is that they can't be recycled, and they gum up the machines that separate recyclables. I use them for other things as well. They're very handy.

I`m amazed at the things that people whine about. I`ve never seen plastic ketchup and mustard bottles hanging in trees but I`ve seen plenty of bags in trees along the highways. They`ll still be putting meat and fish in plastic bags so we`ll have enough to line wastebaskets. BFD
Often I'll ask the clerk at the hardware store to bag my single item. I tell the clerk that I can use the bag.

Gotta start somewhere.

Everything starts small.

Stop whining.

The problem isn't the bags, but the slobs who let them blow away.

It doesn't matter how loud you yell, they still won't listen ... do they still throw their household trash in the rivers in Carolina? ... the dumps were free, but folks just kept throwing their trash into the rivers ... at least in Iowa, they burned it first, before they bulldozed the remains into the rivers ...

I've rarely sent a plastic bag to the dump empty ... they're full of CAT SHIT before I throw them away ... I don't throw away paper sacks at all, they're too useful ... all excess is easy to recycle ... glass is another container material that recycles really really well ...

Plastic may not recycle, but it sure as hell can be reused ...

Plastic burns ... we can make electricity from it ... and we won't have to separate the various plastics, just burn them at a high temperature ... plants can use the CO2 as food and grow more human food crops, especially with higher global temperatures and more abundant and widespread rainfall ...

Planting trees in our urban landscapes does more to relieve human suffering than all the plastic bans put together ... your native maples and oaks ought not to need much help, just someone to put the darling babies in the ground ...

I really hate the excess packaging. Thanks for posting that picture.

Nasty tale ... I still feel awful for doing this ... worse example of waste imaginable ...

TL;DR is I needed them short screws for those electrical wall plates covering the outlets and switches ... 1/2"x1/8" 6-32 ... now the package has to be big enough for the UPC code, and a bit of blister plastic, printing, labor, shelf space ... 20¢ each is understandable ...

Down the aisle are the switch plates on sale for 10¢ each, and these come with the two screws ... so now there's 50 switch plates in the landfill and I have a lil' drawer full of lil' screws ... on the cheap ...

I am deeply ashamed of myself ...

90% of all plastic doesn't get recycled anyway

Which is why it has permeated every space on the Earth and your body..

Pieces small enough to fit inside a cell ... just floating around doing nothing ...

Reduced carbon? ... that ain't going to happen ... no way does mother nature let that valuable a resource go to waste ... something will evolve that eats plastic ... and THAT'S when we're in trouble ... if you believe in that evolution stuff ...

The passing of time eats everything.

If there's a Rez anywhere near you, shop there. They always use plastic bags.

They are trying to save on crude oil. They have reduced the size / thickness of many plastic cased things to save on crude

All these idiot kids that are gluing themselves to the asphalt to ban crude oil don't realize. With no crude oil they would have no plastics, no tires, no solar panels, no nothing that is made with petrochemicals.

It's true that most plastics of all kinds do not get recycled. But the issue of bags is complicated and they pose a particular risk to the environment. In addition, common sense would tell you that by banning bags, the total of all plastic going into the environment will be reduced

You seem to just be throwing your hands up and not wanting to be bothered, but every little bit helps. The fact is that there is nothing idiotic about banning plastic bags
