Here is a pretty good reason. A High Speed Rail can only be built if it's put on a National Level. And then Nationally funded. That means that it has to be done at a Federal Level. It's expensive and intensive. ALL the successful high speed rails are Nationally supported and always will be. Or at least until they get the point of reach self sufficiency. Until the Feds pony up with a whole bunch of billions of bucks on a yearly basis, there just won't be a high speed rail.

Yea, I don’t buy that reason. California has a GDP 5 times larger than Taiwan’s, and 3 times larger on a per capital basis. California has more access to capital than Taiwan. The reason Taiwan can do it is because they don’t have to deal with all the government regulations, pure and simple.

If the Government wants to do something, they just hike the rates to the people to pay for it and they just do it no matter what the costs. Funding the project is not the issue in California, jumping through the multitude of government regulations is, and as you noted, that isn’t the issue in Taiwan.

And a High Speed Rail is going to have to be a raised rail all the way where NOTHING can obstruct it. Plus, the cost of getting the land to build it. That land is private land. The cost will keep going up and up. They have about 119 miles of it already built and that's about 1/10 of what needs to be built. You want it done, you do it right. No bargain basement jobs. Or you don't do it at all. The problem is, it's far enough along they just about have to continue. If the Federals don't give them another dime, California is rich enough to do the job without those funds. Of course, all California has to do is to stop giving the hundreds of millions of free handouts it gives the Federal Government so they can redistribute it to the Run Down Republican States. I would love to see that. Imagine if states like mine were to do the same thing.

Count me in for that. I’d love for the states to handle their own education, social security, healthcare, etc. let the feds deliver the mail, manage the interstate highways and protect the borders. The Federal Government would massively shrink and the money would be better managed.
