Sudan, South Sudan pin hope on Bashirs visit to Juba

Most of the Sudanese and South Sudanese official levels have pined hope on President Omar al-Bashirs visit to South Sudan on Friday.

President Al Bashirs visit "will be good for the future of the two countries"; South Sudanese information minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin said before Bashirs plane touched down. "There should be peace between the two countries," he said.

"We are expecting good news from this visit," Ahmed Bilal Osman, Sudan||s information minister, told SUNA.

He said the trip "comes at a propitious political time after signing the cooperation agreements in Addis Ababa" and that the problems between the two states, "are on the way to being solved".

"The visit will break the barriers of lack of confidence and express good political will to implement what has been agreed".

"Our brothers in South Sudan will only hear good words from us. We are working to narrow the area of difference and to widen the area of agreement, to prevent anything negative in the relation between both sides."

There has been an easing of tension since the two countries have agreed to resume pumping oil last month.

Diplomats hope Bashirs visit will help the two sides overcome deep mistrust and solve their remaining disputes over the ownership of Abyei and other contested border regions.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti described as historic and very successful, pointing to the a new spirit prevailed Al-Bashir-Salva meeting.

The African Union has welcomed the visit of Sudan’s President Omar Hassan Al Bashir to Juba as a crucial step to mend and enhance future ties between the former civil war foes.

AU Chairperson, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said the visit would provide a further opportunity to boost the progress achieved so far between the two sides.

“The meeting should be used as an opportunity to address the remaining outstanding issues between them”, she said.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday welcomed the meeting of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and his South Sudanese counterpart Salva Kiir Mayardit, and urged the two leaders "to maintain this positive momentum."

"The secretary-general welcomes the meeting of the Presidents of Sudan and South Sudan in Juba today," said a statement issued here by Bans spokesman.

Ban "is encouraged by their constructive discussions on the implementation of the agreements they signed in Addis Ababa on 27 September 2012 and urges them to maintain this positive momentum," the statement said.

The two presidents on Friday, at a joint press conference in Juba, capital of South Sudan, described the settlement of the security issue as crucial for carrying out any cooperation between the two countries.

They vowed to implement the items of the security agreement, praising the steps made by the two sides to establish a demilitarized zone on their joint border.
