"When we seek to shelter our students and campus communities from views that are diametrically opposed to their own," he continued, "we actually leave our students far less capable of combating those ideas. ... We cannot, and we will not, ever accomplish this if we continue to exist in ideological, social, and racial silos."

At the ceremony Wednesday, Jackson interrupted DeVos shortly into her address in order to quiet graduates in the crowd, some of whom had risen to their feet to turn their backs on DeVos in protest.

The graduates' booing and turning their backs doesn't surprise me. It's just another manifestation of the impertinence people are given easily to exhibiting in their public lives. Accordingly, the students' behavior, though churlish, ruefully typifies that which, apparently, 20-somethings these days consider de rigueur. What strikes me as far less typical is that a HBC invited Devos to speak at its commencement.

One question to the OP-ers: Why the emphasis on the students' insolence and not on what Devos said in her address? It seems to me that by commenting on the students' incivility, you've given them notice they don't deserve. In contrast, regardless of what one, I even, think of the woman and her views, she holds the office of EdSec, and her office should automatically make her remarks noteworthy. Were they so vapid that you saw no point in discussing them?
