When I went into the Army in 1957, my buddies and I would go into Philly on week-ends and bar hop. Many bars had signs that said "No dogs or servicemen allowed." Of course we would go to the bars in a big group looking for a skirmish. However we steered clear of the gay bars.
I went into Seattle for the first time in June 1960. The bars there had more civilized signage. Their's simply said "Servicemen in uniform not allowed." Them wuz the good ol' days
My dad drank free in bars while in uniform around where I grew up.
