You nailed this one perfectly. The driving force and the organizing beacon for the CRM as it unfolded in the South (I can't speak for other parts of the country) was the Black church(es). As time went by some of the Jewish Synagogues and White churches (more the more the liturgical sort than the Bible-thumping variety) joined in to one extent or another.
