Montel Jones, 19, was caught on a security camera as he opened fire on Friday afternoon, its alleged. He only hit one onlooker in the hand after firing 12 rounds from a .45-caliber handgun, authorities say. Jones had rushed outside his home in the 7700 block of South Essex with the gun after someone told him his sister was fighting, prosecutors say. But speaking Sunday outside court, Jones mom Nina Jones said her son was returning fire in self-defense after somebody in the crowd first fired at him. Neighborhood youths had picked on him and his sister Tameka since they moved in November, she added. Jones yelled I love yall to half a dozen relatives in the courtroom as he was led back into custody after Judge James Brown set his bail at $500,000 Sunday.
