I know it is not customary to begin a commentary on the State Of The Union Address with a movie reference because it is a very serious matter it is an event that impacts the direction of the nation but it is so appropriate that I'm making the exception. The Address displayed quite clearly the overall problem with President Donald J. Trump which is that he is a Smeagol type of person, that is the Smeagol character from the movie the "Lord of the Rings" he is capable of doing outstanding good things and a moment later doing outstanding bad things. Which means the American people are in grave danger from the President of the United States as long as Donald Trump holds the Office!
President Trump like so many Republicans toots the horn that the 2017 tax legislation is so great because look what it is doing for the stock market, the stock market is breaking all kinds of records. But what happens when financial rating agencies and sovereign debt investors see the effects of this foolish legislation specifically America's budget deficit exceeding $900 billion for the next three years and then realize the U.S. government is unable not only to eliminate their debt but also significantly reduce it and will soon be unable to afford even paying the interest on the debt. What happens when this development takes place and interest rates start to skyrocket because U.S. bond investors want a premium for America's poor creditworthiness and these corporations revenue begins to plummet because of interest rate increases and then the corresponding stocks do likewise. Don't treat the American people like fools spewing this stock market garbage we know the score!
President Trump was all happy with himself at his speech proclaiming how Congress repealed the individual mandate and as he stated hitting the "core of the ACA". Well Mr. President to most good people you and your Republican colleagues never produced legislation better than the ACA contrary to your promises; and, to these Americans the core of the ACA was an outstandingly grand deal with the insurance industry which was you give the American people community pricing in the individual insurance market and we will give you large pools of enrollees through the individual mandate so you will be able to give affordable premiums considering the cost of people with preexisting conditions. You President Trump with that repeal torpedoed that system with no good replacement system; most good Americans believe the right thing to do was to improve the ACA by doing things like dialing back a lot of the mandates and going after some of the cost drivers in the system like drug prices. President Trump your laughable in your comments that you're going to be able to correct the unfairness that the American people experience in paying the highest price in the world amongst major developed countries for drugs without legislation empowering you without this Big Pharma will tie you up in such litigation you will end up thinking the visa lawsuits were little summary offense hearings!
President Trump a good President proposes legislation that has a chance of passing into law. Your Infrastructure legislation proposal has absolutely zero chance of becoming law and it is a proposal that communicates to Democrats there is no chance for a deal here don't even try just focus on the mid-terms. President Trump this is what the Democrats and the American people hear from your Speech the President wants legislation that guarantees at least one and a half trillion dollars of infrastructure spending with the federal government only putting up $250 billion and wants the difference to come from state and local governments and from the private sector. The Democrats think this is unbelievable many states don't have two spare nickels to rub together with their medicaid and pension expense problems states have no money for this and in regard to privatizing America's bridges and highways to achieve this the American people don't want these public assets given to the private sector the government is failing the American people when it does things like this!
Mr. Trump on the subject of immigration most Americans view you as a hard head that does not understand the issue and you have a victory available to you but your allowing it to sit in the jaws of defeat. The framework of the solution to America's immigration problem has existed for the last twenty years but no one person or group of people have been able to politically bring it about meaning pass comprehensive immigration reform. Specifically, the framework is legalize and find a path to citizenship for the eleven plus million illegal immigrants that have been in the country longer than three years because otherwise there is too many illegal immigrants for the system to identify, apprehend and deport and in most cases it is just fair they stay because America used these people economically in some cases for decades to now discard these people through deportation is just bad and wrong. In return this problem is solved permanently largely by preventing illegals from working in America. Specifically, mandate all employers use E-verify, [my personal necessary fix mandate Social Security report to ICE all multiple uses of social security numbers in employment and mandate ICE investigate and apprehend all thereby identified illegals], establish a biometric visa tracking system, change the laws to allow for quick deportation and add the needed number of detention facilities ICE agents Border Patrol agents judicial resources etc.. The frustrating thing for the American people is that they want to see some progress here and this won't happen when some of the players are behaving clueless on the issue and unfortunately Mr. Trump is wearing the hat because he keeps talking about comprehensive immigration reform from solving the illegal immigration problem standpoint but isn't even mentioning the other side of the solution resolving the status of eleven million human beings. Obviously, achieving the solution is not possible at the present time but what is achievable and has been so apparent since the government shut down this January as seen in the TV, print and social media seen to the extent it could bring one to tears if the opportunity is lost is that there is the will in Washington to do a DACA fix for a significant increase in border security!
One thing that really stuck in my craw about President Trump's address it was at the end when he said "As long as we have confidence in our values, faith in our citizens and trust in our God we will not fail (as a nation)"! President Trump has a flawed perception of God as if God is going to do some biblical level divine intervention to save America if need be because sometimes it seems President Trump may bring America to that point where we may need such a miracle to stay together as a nation. President Trump would be better served to hold a more mainstream view of God like God may help people of faith with wisdom and inspiration but God gives people free will and if his creatures in America want their country to remain as a country and be a good one they better start using their intellects and their will to bring it about. If President Ronald Reagan were alive the President that promulgated the "Trust but Verify Doctrine" I think he would say to President Trump "Trust in God but Run The Country Correctly Then We Won't Fail"!
