From the story his family told it seems like he had a sudden onset of mental illness over the course of this year. He was fine most of his life then for the past 12 months he has been steadily going crazy.

Apparently they tried to get him help, only to discover there is no help for mental illness in this country. Oh well at least he didn't hurt anyone.
