Police will not enforce Trump's deportation plans

I read in THE TIMES of last Wednesday that the mayors of Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia say they will reuse to co-operate with Donald Trump's plan to deport at least two million immigrants. Charlie Beck, the Los Angeles police chief, said that his officers would stand by their decision of refusing to enforce some federal immigration policies, as they are obliged to do by some Californian laws and regulations. Chief Beck said that the LAPD was "not going to engage in law enforcement activities solely based on somebody's immigration status. We are not going to work with Homeland Security on deportation efforts. That is not our job, nor will I make it our job."

Charlie Beck -- a good cop

A law is only as effective as how it is policed. Trump has met his match if he wants to take-on American cops.

Good cops dont break federal law.

exactly
Chief Beck is not a federal policeman nor are the LAPD.

True. Do you believe they should enforce any Federal law? Federal gun control laws?
Nope; that's for U.S. marshals.

They are not asked to "enforce federal law" --- they are only asked to notify INS when they come across a case of federal law violation. INS will take care of the rest.
They'll be doing no such notifying. That's what Charlie Beck said and I believe him.

LA police are not going to comply with California law and reg.? Sounds like they are putting their state at risk of losing much needed Federal funds.

The one about harassing Mexicans for immigration papers. I learnt my first German from the East German Grenzpolizei:
"Bitte, Ihre Reise-Papiere."

No, you miss the point; California law forbids the police to act as spies for the federal government.

I just quoted your OP maybe you should read it. Also some folks need to be mindful of the fact that harboring a fugitive is a felony.

Thats weird. Google translate wont do it.
But until we weed out illegals i'm good with that.
Of course the easier route would be to ban all public services and they'll leave on their own.

Indeed, the LAPD will not enforce federal immigration policies as they (because) the police are obliged by California law to not enforce federal immigration laws, to paraphrase Chief Beck.

Persons do not lose their human or civil rights simply because they are undocumented Mexicans.

You dont have civil rights in America if you're an illegal.

Someone told you wrong information; human and civil rights are not forfeited once a Mexican makes it to Escondido. Any restaurant which refused food to a paying customer in the United States cannot, by law, refuse service on the grounds that a person is undocumented. Where did you get such an idea from, 1956 Montgomery, Alabama?

So amend the process, but ignoring the law isn't the answer. We do have the right to know who is here and why.
I never said that ignoring the law was the answer. But when the law is so onerous, burdensome, or just plain stupid (i.e. the 55 mph speed limit) it's going to get ignored. That is one thing that won't change.
Why do you consider laws that allow us to know who is entering our country to be stupid?

Correct; states and even cities have their own firearms laws. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have their own agents to police federal regulations.

The federal government have officers of Homeland Security for that.

I didn't say they were equivalent as to severity or proper punishments; I said they were both crimes which they are. For that matter so is holding a bag of pot most places. Are you trying to argue that only the crimes you don't like should be punished?
What I'm saying is that if your law is ineffective and being disregarded with impunity, then it serves you better to revisit the law, rather than insist upon doing more of what is clearly isn't working.

As already mentioned, you have people paying real violent criminal coyotes $3,000 - $5,000 to smuggle them across the border, instead of suffering all the bureaucratic rigmarole to come to Murica legally. The money is telling you something you refuse to hear. In effect, the law is creating even more lawlessness.
