A short time ago, I read Melanie Phillips’ book, “The World Turned Upside Down.” The following is from a recent article that is, in part, based on the book.

1. "Remarkably, in our modern world supposedly dominated by reason, primitive religions and paganism are enjoying a renaissance. The fastest growing religious category in America is witchcraft and paganism….One contributing factor to this trend is the rise in another cause célèbre of the intelligentsia: environmentalism.

2. “God was dead, apparently; and yet secular progressives were seeking spiritual expression by going backwards in time to the paganism that had preceded the Hebrew Bible and Christianity—texts which they called reactionary,” [Melanie] Phillips writes [in “The World Turned Upside Down]. They rejected and attacked the “male God” revealed in Scripture in favor of “Mother Earth” and varying versions of female-dominated spiritualism.

3. The nature-worship that feeds and informs the environmental movement … is the heretical notion that the greatest enemies of the planet are human beings. Environmentalism’s most extreme proponents are not content with antipollution efforts, for example; they advocate a revolutionary return to hunter-gatherer primitivism. Some have compared humans to an infectious disease, a cancer on the planet. Valuing humans over other animals is branded as “speciesism,” a sin as unforgivable as racism or sexism, if not more so. Paul Watson, who founded Greenpeace and directs the Sierra Club, said that “earthworms are far more valuable than people,” and the “world will be a much nicer place without us.”

4. Unsurprisingly, many of them are big believers in population-control methods like compulsory sterilization and abortion. Even John Holdren, adviser to President Barack Obama and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, wrote a book in 1977 approving of these despotic policies.

5. These [views] represent a fundamental hostility to reason. Yet they are manifestly present in the supposedly irreproachable, objective realm of science: Consider the evidence-defying, data-manipulating commitment to the man-made global warming doctrine and the impassioned vilification of skeptics; or the blacklisting and excommunication of scientists…

Typical con trick. Find the most out-there types and make them out to be typical. While many of the things mentioned have happened from time to time, saying that those are mainstream opinions is FRAUD!!!

a. One spin-off of the Enlightenment was the desire to find new myths that would transcend daily existence and take one to a higher level of purification. Proto-fascist, and founder of ecology, Ernst Haeckel, invested nature-worship with the belief that all matter was alive and possessed mental attributes. In ‘monism,’ he brought together hostility to Christianity and propaganda for Darwinism, a nature cult and theories of hygiene and selective breeding. J.W. Burrow, “The Crisis of Reason: European Thought, 1848-1914,” p. 218-19

b. “In 1867 the German zoologist Ernst Haeckel coined the term 'ecology'
and began to establish it as a scientific discipline dedicated to studying
the interactions between organism and environment. Haeckel believed in nordic racial superiority, strenuously opposed race mixing and enthusiastically supported racial
eugenics. Haeckel contributed to that special variety of German
thought which served as the seed bed for National Socialism. He
became one of Germany's major ideologists for racism, nationalism
and imperialism…he fulminated in antisemitic tones…played a
key role in the establishment of the Nazi movement.” Eco Fascism / Fascist Ideology : the Green Wing of the Nazi Party and Its Historical Antecedents by Peter Staudenmaier

Progressivism and existentialism are not the same thing. To imply otherwise is a sign of low IQ.

Who is 'they', exactly? The progressives? The feminists? Make up your mind.

Not wanting to drink toxic waste is nature-worship?

So sorry that you are having so much trouble understanding the post...must be that low IQ to which you allude.

I strongly suggest that you not pick up Phillips' book, as it will leave you feeling even more inadequate.

Stay with Harry Potter...

What're you babbling about and what does it have to do with anything?

And? That has what to do with whether ecology is a valid science? Oh wait, it doesn't- it's just another sad ad hom.

Which has what to do with environmentalism?
Has it every entered your consciousness that the other side may just be correct, and you have been misled by dogma and ideology...?

Has it ever entered you mind to stick to one subject and try being honest?

Evasion and ad homs. Just your style- kinda like when you said that saying America was united by a common spirit and not just paper meant someone wanted to throw away the Constitution completely.

Wow, I really must have hit a sore spot referring to your low IQ...has that always been the comment folks make when they know you?

Let me give you a hint that may make your trip through life a bit easier: it's really your lack of civility that brings out the dislike....

And is the neg rep with which you responded supposed to intimidate?

Guess again, You tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try'.

Now, here's something you've probably heard often: take a walk, twerp.

There's a hole in the ozone larger than Antarctica that we created.

There's a garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas that we created.

There's an oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico as big as the state of Maryland that we created.

Atmospheric CO2 has increased by almost 50% in the last 200 years because of us.

We are melting the North Polar Ice Cap, which has been there for at least a million years.

Wake up, my friend.

And yet the largest hole ever recorded in the ozone layer occured 30 years AFTER CFC 's were eliminated.

The garbage patch is pretty impressive but it will eventually go away on it's own. And in the meantime it does little harm, but it certainly looks ugly.

The oil too will go away in time.

Atmospheric CO2 doesn't matter. The climate operates independantly of CO2,,,read the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics (conservation of energy).

The polar ice cap is fluctuating within natural limits. Lighten up Francis the sky is not falling.

Did he claim CFCs were the only cause?

How long to CFCs take to break down?

What other factors effect the ozone layer?

Both of you please present your explanations.

Much of it is plastic, which is not biodegradable. How will it 'go away on its own', especially if we continue to add to it?
The oil too will go away in time.
How long will the damage last? there is still oil is Prince Edward Sound. Radiation, too goes away with time. Is Chernobyl, then not a bad thing we should avoid repeating?

Please present your evidence rebutting the claims that C0^2 has an effect on heat retention and, in turn, climate.

Could you each present your arguments regarding the ice caps?

I don't know. Harry Potter is pretty complex.

I do find the OP provocative though. It's too late and I'm too sleepy to formulate a coherant post so am just bookmarking for now. Will revisit tomorrow.

CFC's are so far the only human cause attributed that I have found.

The Ozone Hole

Who knows how long the garbage patch will last? 100 years? No one knows. But I can safely tell you that it will not last more than 200 years. That's how long it takes for the ultraviolet radiation from the sun to break down the plastics.

The same goes for the oil. It's been around for several million years and there are natural seeps all over the world and the oceans have no problem dealing with the natural seeps. Thus it is pretty safe to assume that the oceans will have no problem dealing with the oil man introduced. It just takes time.

For CO2 read the second law of thermodynamics which states that you can't get more energy from any particular process then you put in. Thus to generate CO2 derived global warming you must create a perpetual motion machine, which we know is impossible.

Here is a graph for the sea ice anomolies (both north and south poles. As you can see the anomoly is positive overall. It is currently down in the north (but coming back very fast) and it is very positive in the antarctic. Enough so that the TOTAL sea ice levels are the same as they were way back in 1980.

Environmentalism is growing because more and more of us are realizing that we all live downstream and downwind.

I became environmentally aware (alrthough the term environmenalism wasn't yet in anybody's consciousness) in the early 1960s when I saw motorboats fucking up my Delaware river where I had been having a sort of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn existence.

Upon realizing that one idiot in a motorboat could screw up the taste of the river for miles for everybody who was swimming it, I declared my own little private war on motorboats in my part of the river.

Shortly thereafter I also began to realize how badly JT Baker chemical company was fouling the water slightly downstream from that area of the river that I felt like was MY RIVER.

South of that chemical plant the river was basically so polluted that it ws unsafe to swim in.

It took my generation about another ten years before they began to wake up to what unchecked industrialism was doing to the environment.
