One of our renters swore out a warrant for her arrest a couple of years ago for, she claims, slamming a door on her foot. Because the charge was on her record she couldn't buy the gun. Of course the charge was false, but this woman was prepared to perjure herself in court and have others do the same so we decided to plead no contest to the charge. We didn't want to pay several thousand dollars to defend it in court. My wife was put on probation and was promised by our lawyer to have the charges exsponged from her record in a year. He failed to do so. This is why she couldn't buy a gun. Most reputable gun dealers won't sell to her and now they won't sell one to me because they know I might give it to her. That is called a Straw Sale which is a felony.

I don't know the state what you are from, but there are plenty of gun stores. Surely you can find a gun store and purchase that type of gun. It isn't a Straw Sale to let your wife use your gun and she isn't a felon. There is no law broken there.

Criminals aren't stopped by something being illegal.

Let's say I'm a felon in DC or Chicago and I want to purchase a weapon. I find someone, maybe a friend or someone who will do it and keep quiet. I get them to find another person who will find a crack whore with a good enough record for a background check and with proper ID. She buys the gun, give it to the other guy, who gives it to the guy that gives it to me. If they ever try to trace that gun and find the crack whore, she says she sold it to the second guy. If they find the second guy, he says I sold it to the first guy. If they find the first guy and he's your friend, he can say the gun was stolen. If the first guy is just someone willing to do it for money, he doesn't really know you and has been told to say the gun is stolen. The point is there are all kinds of ways to get guns, when firearms don't require periodic registration and are allowed to be privately sold.

If you can find a way to limit guns getting into major cities with street gangs, so the cops can remove the guns that are on the streets, then you can give them the upper hand to fight crime. The cops in NYC were stopping people if they looked like they may have a gun and I'm sure they went overboard on that. That's how they dropped their homicides, but in the area around NYC, it isn't easy to buy guns.
