"Reaching for the brass ring", this saying has been around a long time. Many don't know it is from the 20s and 30s when children would ride the merry-go-round. Operators of Merry-go-rounds would place a dispenser of brass rings on the wall near the rotating horses that the children could reach for from their horses to try to grab one. When one was taken another ring would drop into place ready to be plucked. Thus the children were 'reaching for the brass ring'. This endeavour took some skill, timing, and patience.
