Saying you are independent and actually being independent are very different things. While these are probably not blind party partisans I suspect they already lean right or left and probably vote that way the majority of the time.

The OP itself is a manifestation of the failure of the American Public Education system, especially as it relates to Civics education.
Registering as an "Independent" is simply stupid. All it accomplishes is to prevent you from voting in primary elections (in rational States and Commonwealths). Allowing Independents or non-partisans to vote in Primaries is even stupider; it compromises the results of the Primary.
My father was a "Conservative" since before the term was even applied to politics. And yet in the Leftist bastion of Pittsburgh, he was a lifetime Democrat. The reason was that the only meaningful elections in Pittsburgh were/are the Primary Elections. It is those elections that decide who the elected officials will be. A vote in the Republican primary in a Leftist stronghold is nearly meaningless.
