RIGHT BEHIND YOU
My Detroit Tigers were in the eye of the storm for 4 days after another frustrating first round thumping in the playoffs. Dombrowski had to deal with the rumors about Scherzer and trying to beef up an outfield without Torii Hunter. Boras made it interesting as usual floating stories to his media dupes that the Tigers would "spend big big" to keep Scherzer after he'd turned down a 6 year $144M deal in the Spring. Boras says Max will get $200M and tried to freak out Detroit saying they wouldn't get a chance to match (as if they would). So what did the Tigers GM do?

He got his power hitter in Cespedes, bullpen guy, and an A ball prospect for Rick Porcello...a young and mediocre homegrown pitcher who will be an expensive FA next year. Cuban exile Cespedes has a reputation for a bad attitude and lousy plate discipline...but then look who he's played for...Oakland where he was the main guy and Boston where he was the only guy last year. Being around Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez will change that in a hurry. And if it's a home Cespedes is looking for, Detroit seems a perfect fit for his bat and cannon arm in that huge outfield. DD was very pleased he finally got Cespedes after missing out on him 3 years ago.

The market for Scherzer at this point seems to be between the Yankees and....the Yankees. Few clubs will risk the kind of contract Boras is trying to get for a 31 year old with a violent delivery. 7 years? A club one pitcher short of a run at a ring might bite but not at that number. And Max has a delivery that can come apart at any moment. Without Jeff Jones (Detroit pitching coach) there to watch him, Max could end up being the biggest contract bust in MLB history.
