Misinformation: Florida public school slavery history issue

(Bloomberg) -- Will Hurd said Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, his rival for the Republican presidential nomination, should take responsibility for a new state curriculum that calls for teaching that slavery gave enslaved people valuable skills.

“Implying that there is an upside to slavery is absolutely wrong,” said Hurd, a former US representative running a long-shot bid for the GOP nomination, in an interview Monday with Bloomberg Television’s “Balance of Power.”

Comment:
Dr William Allen who is Black helped write the Florida public school slavery history.
He said, “It is the case that Africans proved resourceful, resilient and adaptive, and were able to develop skills and aptitudes which served to their benefit, both while enslaved and after enslaved,” he argued in a short clip that ABC aired.
Dr Allen was not endorsing slavery.
He was praising the ingenuity and determination of Slaves.
But the Dems, Yellow Press and DeSantis's rivel Gurd are twisting the facts.

We could also teach that slaves got FREE FOOD and FREE ACCOMMODATION.

I mean, HOW FUCKING LUCKY WERE THEY?

We need to be teaching how lucky black slaves were instead of looking at the negatives like, er... they were FUCKING SLAVES.

"Wow" is just my usual response when I encounter a real racist in the wild.

So he's racist for posting a link? I really think you like so many others are just following along, glad to have something else to be outraged about..... but facts like the black academic who dissagrees with the Democrat narative? Its almost like you want to believe its made up.
If someone isnt outraged at Desantis and calling him a racist....well then they must be racists too!
cant have any free thinking around here, by golly! your either a racist or Stepping in line with what you say is moral.... nothing in between.
All I see is people making snap judgements, calling others names and equating them with slaveholders or Nazis.... all based on emotion and not based on any fact.

Well if 99% of what they are learning about slavery is the abhorent part... I would like to see what context that 1 - 3% is exactly before jumping to judgement about it. Simply because I dont trust reactions coming from politicians and news media in this highly politicized world. Everything is talked about to make a point! especially with an election coming up. Does it matter that two Black American scholars helped put this together?

really? middle schoolers cant handle this? yet many progressive Libs think middle schoolers are just fine to hide from their parents the fact that they want to change their gender identity. And where did they get these ideas from? teachers in school, thats where. I think they can handle a little adverse information. When it comes to history anyways... it doesnt need to be editorialized for them. all they really need are the facts, and then if they have open discussion in class about these topics.... how is it that kids are going to walk away feeling that slavery was good in any way?
Let me turn this around for you. For Florida and many Southern States, the fact that in this world a man can fall in love with another man is so disturbing that kids as old as 18 now can not discuss it in class. Books attesting to this fact HAVE to be removed from school libraries, and teachers are FORBIDDEN to mention it in class. This BY LAW.

Yet it is important enough to put in a textbook that the institution of slavery was in some cases beneficial to the slaves (not the slaveowners as you seem to suggest, because that's not what the sentence says.)

Do you have any idea how offensive that would be to black people?

Let me put it in another way, maybe that would make it clearer.

If in a textbook discussing the Holocaust (forgive me that I hark back on that, it's just a useful analogy.) It is mentioned that a lot of Jews were successful if they survived because the machining skills they learned while doing slave labor for IG Farben. Would you have any trouble understanding how inappropriate that would be to put that in a textbook no matter how clear that same textbook makes it that the Holocaust was horrendous?

The left rewrites history and teaches it as doctrine to influence minds and hearts so they can better be controlled.

That's why they demand that pioneers, all figures of history from Columbus to the conquistadors to the Founders to the pioneers, etc. must now be portrayed as evil. Students are to be taught that they are all are bad people and the bad things they did will be emphasized, but none of the truly remarkable things that they also did.

The conquistadors and Pilgrims arrived are seen as invaders who took land from the indigenous people which in some cases they did. But they don't want it taught how those same indigenous people often took land, slaves, etc. from each other and not at all nicely.

So of course all slaves must be thought of as abused, starved, treated dreadfully and for certain many were. But for sure not all were. And while nobody but nobody condones slavery or tries to paint it as defensible, many slaves did learn farming, carpentry, business, supervisory skills, etc. and that would serve them well after emancipation and they were forced into making it on their own.

And again while he and nobody else condones slavery in ANY respect, independent thinkers like Thomas Sowell and Walter E. Williams, et al, who descended from slaves, are quite honest that they benefitted from somebody cruelly dragging their ancestors in chains to this country. The descendants of those slaves now have unquestioned American citizenship and likely enjoy prosperity and opportunity that they are very likely not to have had were they born in the countries those ancestors came from.

History is what it is and all of it should be taught and understood so that we can benefit/learn from it, the good and the bad that exists in all government, all generations, all philosophies, doctrines, ideology..

And if that is how Florida will teach history now, those children are truly blessed.

The Dems/Press fear DeSantis, this is why they are attempting to smear him with the false accusation of racism.
They always accuse their opponents of being racist.
The Democrat Party is based upon ignorance, hate and fear.

You are a fruitcake. Stop doing the Democrat word twisting. You are right that there would be people who are Black in the U.S. right now. But not nearly as many as there are today. Not even close. Not 13% of the population. More like 1.3% of the population if that many.
And you are a linguistically disabled fool, fool.

Sans slavery the Africans here today, whatever their numbers, would be Americans, not African Americans.

Slavery based solely on race is the sole cause of race issues in this country and, of course, your ignorant bigotry

Don't forget the free tats

Yeah, you DemoKKKrats are disgusting people.

No, the sole cause is politics. Democrats have race baited for decades with Jerkson and Dullton leading the way. Along with Democrats using the bait of welfare have kept Blacks in chains for their votes. Free Obama money and phones.
It was Republicans who led the way first with Lincoln and then the civil rights bill whom Democrats apposed.
Now, the Democrats with Antifa and BLM have stirred up the hearts of men to fight against whites who have no racism in them. All to remain in power. Not for the benefit of people who are Black. They also have targeted Asians as well with their hatred. White oriole repented long ago. It was your Democrats that started the hatred again. Not slavery.

Not just linguistically impaired by historically ignorant.

Long before there were ever Republicans or Democrats the Church provided biblical justification of the inferiority of Black people and their "need" to be enslaved for their own good.
