It was the United Nations that divided Palestine into a Jewish homeland and a Palestinian homeland. When they did it was the Arabs who refused to accept that and immediately attacked the Jews under the leadership of the Jerusalem Grand Mufti. When the Jews emerged victorious in that conflict they declared themselves a sovereign nation...a nation that was recognized by both the US and the Soviets. As soon as that declaration was made the newly formed nation of Israel was attacked from all sides by Trans Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. The million Arabs that were "displaced" for the most part left on their own because they believed that those Arab armies would make short work of Israel, slaughter the Jews and they would return to an Arab held land! It didn't turn out that way. The Israelis beat back the attackers and survived. The Israelis bought their sovereign nation with their own blood and have defended it from continuous attacks ever since.

The UN didn't divide nor proclaim anything in 1947 nor in 1948 - that is why it's called "UN Partition PLAN 1947" and was rightfully rejected by the Arab-League.
Israel was accepted/recognized as a sovereign state by the UN in May 1949 - and isn't a full member until today - guess why.

The self proclaimed and illegal State of Israel, was attacked by the Arab-league - and not Jews living in and under the British Mandate of Palestine.
Israel from then on kicked off the wars in order to get it's hands onto the UN intended Palestinian territories. - following up this policy until today.
First in 1956 via attacking Egypt and occupying Gaza and Sinai - Israel had to withdraw, "extremely" reluctant, but had to give in due to UN and US pressure.
Then in 1967 via again attacking Egypt, and their allied States.

The only time the Arabs and Egypt attacked a UN acknowledged sovereign Israel was in 1973 - the Yom Kippur War.
Egypt to regain the Sinai and Syria to regain the Golan heights - that they would have marched right into Tel-Aviv if capable - is rather certain.

Again your Master in History totally fails you. Maybe you did read up volume 1 to ... , of "Prince Valiant" - which beholds great color pictures and a totally distorted history timeline and depictions.

By the time Israel was able to declare their independence they controlled a vast amount of territory in Palestine. Plus they were already fighting the Arab Armies inside Palestine when the Arab nation were able to declare war on the fledgling nation.

From what I have read, Jewish Americans have been in the forefront of civil rights for them.

I believe two Jewish young men were killed in Mississippi while fighting for their civil rights.
