Masking sexual abuse as treatment?

Oops, I forgot to post an excerpt from the article.

Three former members of the U.S. National Gymnastics team, one of them an Olympic medalist, describe for the first time the sexual abuse they say they suffered at the hands of the team’s doctor, Lawrence Nassar. The women’s attorney, who is suing USA Gymnastics for failing to protect the women, believes hundreds of athletes may have been abused going back to the 1996 Olympic Games. Dr. Jonathan LaPook reports this story for 60 Minutes on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. ET/PT.

Dr. Nassar, currently in custody on charges of criminal sexual conduct and possession of child pornography unrelated to the Gymnastics team, told the women and girls at the time that he was performing medical treatment on them.

Jessica Howard was the U.S. National champion in rhythmic gymnastics from 1999 to 2001. She recalls one session with Dr. Nassar. “He started massaging me. And-- he had asked me not to wear any underwear. And then he just continued to go into more and more intimate places,” she tells LaPook. “I remember thinking something was off but I didn’t feel like I was able to say anything because he was, you know, this very high profile doctor,” says Howard. The girls questioned Nassar’s behavior among themselves. “The girls would say ‘yeah he touches you funny,’” she recalls.

He's from my neck of the woods. He's been around Michigan State Doctor and a string of these have come out, about 30.

I honestly have no idea how he got away with this so long.

And yeah, they should have female doctors.

. To many times this sort of thing is happening it seems these days. The criminal penalties should be increased big time (make stronger examples of these people), and this by giving them life sentences without parole or in some cases worse.

I agree and I've argued this point before, however others have brought up the good point that if we do that, then we could have dead girls on our hands instead of abused girls. You are right though, this kind of stuff happens WAY too much. It's disgusting and totally despicable that any adult would creep on little girls and boys.

This is how the well intentioned mentality that we are all equal (sexes) blurs into we are all the same; to the detriment of our children. Terrible that we as a culture have fostered a society where an incident like this can so easily happen... Societally, this is a self inflicted wound. And unfortunately these girls must carry the scars of our failures.

I'm sure (in fact I know) there are some fine male doctors out there who would never even think of doing such a thing, but that is too big of a risk to take when you are responsible for the safety and well being of HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of young girls (and some boys as well).

. Yes you are right that if a perp knows the severe consequences of his actions, then he might would then try to cover his tracks by eliminating the evidence, but this is happening anyways depending on the perpetrator dealt with. Have to make the leap to making examples of these perps by placing them on death row or giving them life without the possibility of parole in order to begin to see a changes in these patterns. Sadly it is the only way out, and yes some victims may parish in the attempt to gain back control, but one thing is for sure, and that is that the perp will meet his maker quickly if takes that option.

Once that sinks down to the understandings of our youngest minds due to implementation, then and only then will we begin to bring up a generation of citizens who will fear the laws again, and will fear the consequences of their actions thus causing a serious thought to occur before they act out, and it may even create more heroes who would become champions of good, and therefore they would put themselves on the front lines towards keeping this nations vulnerable safe by implementing the laws against predators without pause. It's tough to roll back something that is out of control, and in the process of rolling it back sadly people get hurt, but their sacrifices will not go un-noticed nor shall they ever be forgotten.

Educating our young people/children is very important too. The problem is though that they feel like they are "just kids" and that people are going to naturally believe another adult over them. This is a problem that needs a solution, but I don't know what the solution could be. There is nothing more I would like than to kill a person who does this kind of stuff to kids with my bare hands. It really enrages me and disgusts me to the core of my being. However, I am against the death penalty. I do not like giving the state the power to kill citizens regardless of what they have done. They are too prone to corruption and railroading and faking evidence, etc. etc.

Too big of a risk, meaning you think its a good % chance that males will do this sort of thing?

I wouldnt say so, I wont accept these scummers as representatives of my gender. I didnt subscribe to it and I wont allow it, same as cat callers and creepers and all the rest.

Plus, compare the % of humans that are pedophiles to the % of humans that are lesbian pedophiles and then see if gender assigning your doctor even mitigates that risk.

The rhetoric here is that Data doesnt matter, but of course it does and having a Male Doctor is close to zero risk and Im very sorry for these Victims and that these scumbags even exist......but they're not our breed they're something different than "male," they're mentally ill.

Sexual abuse of minors is overwhelmingly committed by the male gender. That is just a fact of life.

Disturbing indeed.

Excerpt from article: "California attorney John Manly represents Howard, Antolin and more than 40 others, including a woman who was 9 years old when the alleged abuse took place. He says Nassar abused many more women. “We know that at least 60 have come forward, but my best estimate is it’s in the hundreds and possibly more,” he tells LaPook. Manly believes the alleged abuse began over 20 years ago. “I believe that at the end of the day, there are members of every single Olympic team since 1996 he did this to.”

But the problem is, its not "overwhelmingly committed," period.

So, thinking its some big risk is incorrect, it ignores reality.

I know thats hard to hear, being that it occurs and causes pain and its tough, but I dont not drive simply because car accidents can mangle me, cause me to be pinned to my dashboard, and then the car starts on fire and I die a horrid death.

Acting like choosing male doctors is some risk is the same, it aint a risk its a super long shot fucking bet that the doctor is some predator.

And thats just "a fact."

Dont get a family dog because one in tens of millions will eat your baby, I dont think so.

Well, you are entitled to make your own decisions. If it had been up to me? I would have hired a female doctor and cut even those odds in half at least.

. Does anyone think that internet porn, and the ease of access to the masses is even causing far more severe damage to society than is being written or told about ?? Is there a connection in it all ??

. Yes when talking odds you are right, but I understand what the poster is saying also.
