Let's say the Republicans take the Senate

There is no such thing as a "moderate" Republican. There are creatures that firmly believe they can be two diametrically opposed things at the same time but in reality are neither.

Just closeted Democrats.

I disagree. The extremes on the right and the left are equally bad for the country. The far left is in control now, the far right would be no better. The difference is that most democrats are far left and very few republicans are far right.

The far right consists of folks like Redfish and Henry and Vigilante.

there is not going to be any impeachment. The only people who want it are partisan dem fools like you. The GOP will be much better off in 2016 after obama has two more years to screw up the country.
Translating Redfish: He knows I am Republican, and he can't stand that I rebuke continually his anti-American cultural mccarthyism. He is right there will not be any impeachment. He may be right that we have a chance in 2016 if we get rid of any decision or policy making by such as he in party matters.

you are no more a republican than Pelosi. What you are is a liar.

Translation: Jake is a better Republican than me and I can't stand the moderates in the Party are making those like me irrelevant.

Translation: Jake will continue to lie and promote the far left agenda while denigrating those in the middle in both parties. Jake has his head firmly up obama's butt, and they are both enjoying it.

Translation: Redfish is in a growing minority within the GOP and calls everyone who disagrees with him a lefty and pretends that he is a moderate when in fact he is a far right droidbot.

you are a fool. nothing you post has any truth to it. The growing minority is the far left like you, obama, pelosi, whoopi, and Reid. Even your boy Maher is now dumping on obama

What is referred to as the right today are American patriots, the far left like jake and his sock rightwinger are traitors.

.

It's the day after the elections (or the run-offs) and the Republicans now hold 51 to 54 Senate seats.

Now what? What would we see? What's the plan? And remember that Obama is still in the White House.

What will their victory mean in tangible terms?

Be specific, please.

.
Another Democratic president elected in 2016.

Yup. Clinton was the Prez but the Reps had Congress. They were able to work together and the country purred along.
Since Barry has stated many times the he won and has made no effort to work with the Reps then I doubt anything will get done in his last two years of office.
One can only hope the next POTUS has a lot more on the ball than Barry does and isn't into the green shit and socialism.

Well sure if you ignore the fact he tried to work with them. Thats if you ignore the fact that the right said they are the party of No.
Thats if you ignore the fact that both sides have become nothing more than talking points. Thats if you ignore the fact that things have become so partisan that it makes anything almost impossible.
thats if you completely ignore reality

Hillary or Warren?

Don't believe jake's BS. The "far," for lack of a better term, right is the anchor point of the political atmosphere we find the country. The far left is the one sailing away from center thus distorting what can even be considered moderate. Thus people like Jake think that the right is moving when in fact it is him and his ilk.

Think about, what long standing law, tradition or anything else has the right wing tried to change?

Yeah, this may be as good a guess as we'll get. The GOP would almost certainly pass the bills that Reid has been holding back.

So two questions would remain: How many Obama would sign, and how well he and the Democrats could sell his vetoes.

The last time this country was purring, Clinton was in the White House and the GOP controlled Congress.

Both knew how to play ball. Balance, baby.

.

Forget that. That was prior to the TEA party. By June of next year, I think Obama's approval rating is 10 to 20 points higher if he vetoes these bills. You never look stronger than you do after you've slapped down the opposition.

Key stone may pass because he left himself an out on it.

That's my guess as to what he's thinking.

If the Congress approves some hardcore, Tea Party-fueled stuff, he can point at it, say "holy shit, look at THAT" and veto it.

The more moderate members of the party had better be careful here, and the party had better be cautious about what it wishes for.

.

The problem with having the football is that you're expected to score. When you can't...two things happen.

First...the opposition looks stronger. Not good when there is a six month window between now and the '16 election season kick off.

Two...if you don't aim high and try to flex your new found muscles...your own backers begin to wonder if the coach is trying. So Boehner had better watch his flank.

On the plus side is that the GOP can throttle the engine and decide what to push and what to save for an issue. They can also recraft legislation to appear more mainstream.

I'm harboring a morbid curiosity about how the TP-approved new senators would behave on votes.

If they have control, would they stick to their guns to please their base, or would they moderate, knowing that going too far would hurt them?

I guess we'll see.

.

I think unconsciously you perpetuate the propaganda of the DNC. The right wing has not moved drastically right the left wing has swung far left in comparison. Where has the right wing won any battles in the last 8 years? Where have they tried to reverse long standing law to conform to their view?

So to keep saying that the right wing is radicalized is BS. Standing for marriage, government accountability and the principles of the Tea Party are not radical they are needed. Don't be weighed down with left wing propaganda. THEY are the ones driving us to a world in which we won't recognize. THEY are the radicals.
this is a joke

Excellent thread.

If they were to hold power in this way, they will abuse it. They will speak and act like it's a new RW mandate nad try to push everything their RW addled brains desire. That will turn off the populace and will guarantee a win for Hillary in 2016. Where I predict the left will take BOTH Senate & House.

He certainly knows the stakes for 2016, so my guess is that he'll do the calculus on how he thinks the electorate will react to vetoes and behave accordingly.

As always, this isn't about what's best for America, it's about politics.

.

Bingo. Their politics is way more importand that America or the taxpayers in America.

Yup, your diminshing of power in the GOP is obvious. The moderate is like me, not you. You kind are just the generational growth of cultural mccarthyism is that uprooted in thrown on the garbage heap.

Oh, how silly. The far right is the out house of the GOP and the garbage dump for the rest of America.

The attack from the far right on the CRA and PA laws is an answer to your question.

Pretty much nothing, plain and simple. And then in 2016, Dems will take back control of the Senate. Bottom line is that it's not going to mean much at all. Obama will veto anything they try to do, assuming such things as the repeal of Obamacare and the like.

I think it was a domino effect.

The Tea Partiers and Libertarians pushed the GOP to the right with their rabid absolutism. I don't think it's a secret that the party essentially split in two, with the TP/L side having more energy and influence. Holy crap, Republicans have been going after each other as much as they have been going after Democrats since the advent of the Tea Party.

That emboldened the Democrats to move left. They jumped on the madness that was happening to the GOP and were able to say "See? Look at that! LOOK AT WHAT THEY'RE SAYING. They want to abolish Social Security and Medicare and taxes and government and holy crap roads and bridges and corporations are evil and they want you dead and 47% and AAAUUUUGGHHH!"

Fucking insanity from both parties. But to add to that, the GOP somehow managed to lose to a terribly flawed incumbent President in 2012. Why? Because they are perceived as being NUTS.

The party STILL refuses - proudly, no less, holy shit - to provide the American people with a clear and inspiring reason to vote for them. Instead, what is the public seeing? "Shut down the government, freeloaders, take away health care, Obama is a Kenyan, Obama plays too much golf, Obama is a communist, shut down the government, freedom, liberty, shut down the government, Ebola". Wow, that really fires me up to vote GOP.

The absolutists in the GOP have done the party, and the country, net harm.
