Before long, of course, it became obvious how shallow and under-prepared she was.

I saw her speak recently on C-SPAN, and she still hasn't progressed beyond a long thread of simplistic platitudes, one after the other.

You'd think she'd have improved with all the speeches she's given. Maybe that's good enough for her crowds.

The Democrats assassinate the character of any Republican, even more so for a woman or a black. What's news about that?

Palin's ability to give a speech has always been impressive. Its a medium that thrives on catchy one liners and personal charisma. Both of which she has in abundance.

She does far less well in conversations that involve more than Palin speaking. The moment you involve someone else, things don't work quite as well. And if you start asking her to justify her policy positions....things get even muddier. As one liners don't work. And her command of national topics was often better suited for a small town mayor rather than a VP candidate. In many instances, she wasn't well prepared to answer them.

I'd be inclined to give her a solid mulligan, given the abrupt nature of her rise to national prominence and the lack of time she had to get ready for it. That is....if her command of these same issues had gotten significantly better in the months and years since. To a large extent, she hasn't. The speech circuit apparently doesn't require that kind of attention to detail, instead playing to strengths she already had: catchy one liners and personal charisma.
